I've learned a ton of info from the FB, but never created a thread. I've been working on my Father-in-Law's 39 Ford Deluxe for two years. I have given it a full mechanical refresh, and it's all back together. Before this I'd never worked on an early Ford or flathead before. Now I'm just waiting to get the new tires installed.

And... I still do need to sort out a carb/fuel pump/vacuum leak issue I'm having. I've rebuilt the 94, but I think the base is too worn out. If you have a recommendation for a carb rebuilder, please let me know! I'd really like to get a couple drives in before the season is over in NE Ohio.

Thanks for all the great insight into these early Fords. I hope to get this finished and move on to the 36 3W in the barn!

I'm sad to hear his wife passed. I am glad to hear he's able to work on carbs again. I hope he has a protege, because he's the number one recommendation for carb work on here, and he needs to pass all that knowledge on to someone!
 
I haven't had problems with less than perfect throttle shafts. I do make sure the gasket surfaces between each section is flat enough to seal with a gasket, not perfect but pretty darn good. With the carburetor apart hold the split lines together and in front of a light, you can see the warps to the center and top. I file the bottom of the center section flat, and very carefully body work the top flat enough to seal (it still is not flat, but no longer offends my sensibility). The results are not the most beautiful carburetors out there but they run well. You can try it too.
 
I think that's part of the issue, because the gasket between the base and body is wet. The power valve is not leaking, but it's wet in the PV area of the base.
 
Turns out the main issue was a non-vented gas cap! I've been driving the car all summer long and it's running great.

When you remove the Carb. from the intake manifold, does the intake manifold have a hole on the Carb. mounting surface that leads to the exhaust heat for the manifold. The hot exhaust gases will quickly quickly fry the 94 power valve causing fuel to leak hard starting. That hole in the intake has to be blocked if you use the 94.

No hole between the exhaust crossover and the carb flange. It's got the cast iron manifold that has a bit of a thermal break in the casting between the exhaust chamber and the carb flange. I've also got a phenolic spacer under the carb.

I kept trying to mess with the float height thinking that's why it was leaning out, so I probably had it way too high and it was wicking out the gasket. Once I vented the gas cap, I put the float back down, and no problems anymore!
