Exaust Whiste Help

I wasn't initially going to say anything before, but the sound that is in the video with the Tudor is really more authentic sounding of an old train whistle. That one in the pick-up video is more shrill by my definition and doesn't really sound authentic. The 3 in the picture above also appear to be old steam tractor whistles which I think also sounded different than a train whistle too, ...but what do I know? :)

I do think it is funny that folks have already condemned the ones that were manufactured specifically for the Model A because it might blow soot under the hood. From experience, nothing could be further from the truth. These are not intended to be exhaust cut outs that were opened for extended periods of time. These are signaling whistles that are blown for 5-10 seconds max, ...no different than a quick blast from a vacuum wolf whistle, or a compression whistle, --or even your ahooga horn.

I like the Tudor also. Sounds like the whistle on SP-4449 coming at you at 65 MPH minus the shaking ground feeling!

In 2004 we rode a train with "Vista Dome cars" powered by the Southern Pacific's SP4449 across Montana and Idaho on a three day trip. One of the highlights was 5 or 6 "runbys".

They stop and let you off by the side of the track ... Then they back up 1.5 miles. Everyone sets up their cameras and movie cameras and the train comes charging by at 65 miles an hour. What a sight and sound with the whistle blowing and 500,000 pounds of steel and iron shaking the ground!

One time they were all setup on the main line right next to the highway near Lewiston, Montana.

All the sound checks were done and the train was about a 1/4 of a mile down the track when this jerk drove up with his two kids and ran down the side of the track right in front of all of the cameras, screaming " Kids Kids ... look at that steam engine coming toward us!"

Later on the train I was watching one fellow's tape of the "runby". His comment was " I wonder if ANYONE got a video that is suited to be shown to the wife and kids?" ... Sounded worst than an Army barracks!

The rest of the runbys were done in secluded spots from then on!

One thing I noticed is that the sound is very different when the train is stopped or going slowly, compared to when it is "hoofing" along at 65 and coming straight at you.

Might be the Doppler effect maybe?

They blew the whistle a number of times when we stopped for water and oil for the boiler. The sound is different at speed.

Maybe that is why the tudor sounds the way it does ... as the Tudor is going 50 or so and coming right at the microphone while the PU is slower and going 90 degrees to the camera.

I've got one on the Sports Coupe Its an Aftermarket 3 tube Gabriel type horn and a cut out valve from Synders. However because my car is RHD the horn is fitted just behind the muffler as there is no room to fit it under the hood (as the steering column is in the way). The position means the revs have to be up to get a good whistle but at 50 mph its deafening. At less than 10 mph is not a good whistle.

I have a cut out on the veteran as well but no whistle. The theory is when you are going up hill you engage the cut out bypassing the muffler and therefore decreasing exhaust resistance and increasing performance . Not sure it actually makes much difference but when you've only got 16.9 Hp to start with every little helps !! Karl

I have not listened to any of the video's, but it occurs to me that placement of the whistle on the back side of the muffler would have to reduce the volume of air otherwise derived by placing the whistle in front of the muffler, hence a different and perhaps softer sound?

Ryan, I have a train whistle and really like it. I use to put it on the manifold by the muffler with a adaptor that made is for it. It always gave me a problem of leaking air. So I took it off and a friend made me a new adapator that clamps on the end of the tailpipe. It really sounds good. My son has one there too and sounds good also. Mine isnt quite like the one from Brattons. Call him and ask what people are saying about his before you buy it.
