Engine Sludge question????

some one on a post higher up ask, what oil to run, is run any oil you want as long as its detergent oil, the only manufactors i know of that says use non detergent is air compressors for the hobbiest, and i dont even use it in mine, my compressor is 17 yrs old and still works perfect, and another note, dont use the oil that has the red circle on the container that says for gasolene engines only, it contains little or no zinc to proctect the cam and lifters, that oil is meant for the new engines with roller tappet cams and lifters and they dont need the zinc

Ford1 while I agree with you that Steve is bad (kidding) I disagree with your recommendation of non-detergent oil. Though it almost seemed like you said not to use non-detergent (which I would agree with).

There have been countless arguments and discussions on this forum regarding both detergent oil as well as the need of ZDDP in model A engines.

The spring pressure on the A's valves is so weak it does not require ZDDP to lubricate the cam.

Non-detergent oil does not belong in any engine these days as all it can promise is SLUDGE.

I am not trying to start yet another lengthly oil discussion, please search the forum for it and you will find many people such as Larry Brumfield recommending the use of quality modern detergent and even synthetic oils in model A engines.

Mr Tube, all i can say is opps, i worded that wrong, it should have read use any oil you want as long as it is detergent, sorry for the mix up, i would never advise any one to run a non detergent oil, no matter who makes it, im going to go back and edit my post, boy what a screw up i made
