Door locks everytime

The drivers door on my 31 slant window locks everytime the door is shut.
What's the fix for this?

Could be in the remote. As big of PIA it is to remove and install, probably refurbish the unit.
Might try closing the door and holding the inside handle in place and see what happens.

duck tape- quack quack!

actually I wonder if someone didnt do that intentionally a while back.......

I've reworked every door on my 31 S/W Town Sedan and I think if you take it apart you will find wear in the locking mechanism. I just had a spring break on the right back door and ordered the new springs from Bert's (I think there for a 32) but they work.

Whatever is causing it to lock, when you discover the cause, please let me know so I can modify mine to do that. So many times I tell the spouse unit to lock the car and she doesn't. That automatic locking feature is exactly what mine needs.

The slant windshield door locks and latches are different than earlier cars, right? Earlier cars had a separate lock lever, but don't you lock the S/Ws by rotating the interior door latch handle? Could be the momentum of shutting the door makes the latch handle rotate to the lock position? There must be some spring and detente in the latch mechanism that has worn out that allows the handle to rotate too easily.

As noted above, the restraint on the interior handle that locks that door is in the remote
Ive done dozens of them

OOO good one:D :D :D

They’re tough to get in if you get locked out!
So if the passengers is locked and you don’t know it….and the ignition key isn’t the door key…..often
No remote!!

I worked for enterprise as a detailer, I had a new f150 lock me out with the remote on the drivers seat. I closed the door instictively and it locked on it's own. had to get a locksmith to break it open. I have a key for the door and for the ignition on my a and the only way to lock the door is if the key is in your hand, simple but effective. if all else fails, I have a secret way to open the door

I guess ill just have to remove the latch and look for wear and look at the spring.
I've never heard of the remote ( is this some kind of lever mechanism?) A picture would be helpful.
I don't want to remove the door panel to get into the handle rod area unless it's necessary.

The remote is the rod and triangle where the inside handle mounts. It is attached by rivet to the lock body.
The latch in the jamb has screws behind the panel so it has to come off.
It’s a PIA
Send me your direct email and I’ll send you a pic.

There is a spring in the remote that often either breaks or wiggles loose. That spring is the one that holds the handle in the locked position, or conversely prevents the handle from accidentally getting into the locked position. To fix it you need to disassemble the remote, which involves bending some tabs, replace the spring, and reassemble. All without breaking the tabs. Frankly, it’s a PITA to even get the latch mechanisms out of the doors (you need to remove the windows, which requires you to remove the channels…). (Oldbluval can probably comment here.) I have fixed two of the four doors in my 31 but decided to live with the other two until the opportunity presents itself otherwise. Bert’s has the spring, it’s P/N A-48536.

My S/W also does this sometimes. It's 100% momentum.

I leave the window open so that I can reach in from outside and push the inside handle down to get it out of the Locked position.

This is annoying. I replaced the flat spring on the remote a few years ago (PITA) and it fixed it for a while, but now it's doing it again. I think there is wear on the remote and the spring pressure is not enough to keep the handle from jumping up into the Locked position.

Leave the window open.

The little bump on the plate that the spring goes around can get worn. I haven’t had to do it but a shot of weld material on that would fix it.
