Dome Light and Door Switches

Something doesn't add up.

The Dome Light (DL) is Grounded so when the DL switch is moved to the On position, the light comes on. A hot wire comes from the Head Lamp Switch for power. OK

The Plasticized Diagram also reads:

A Second wire from the DL is mounted before the switch so it's always Hot regardless of the switch on the DL. This wire is sent to the Drivers Door switch which is just a simple on/off.

Two wires are sent over to the Passenger side Door Switch.

What good does it do to open either door??

How are yours wired??

I assume the wire from the H/L switch would turn on the D/L on with the door closed.. Power before the H/L switch feeds power to the both door switches and either one will turn the D/L on. both wires from the door switched are routed together to the D/L. Called a parallel circuit

It becomes a courtesy lamp to help entry during darkness.

The harness runs from the HDL SW to the lamp, one circuit through the door switches. It returns from the dome lamp via the left A-PILLAR across the dash to the right door switch. Can you see the routing on the schematic?

Any luck with it?

I ran new wires to the door switches and wired per Plasticised Diagram for my 56.

I soldered the tips and inserted into door switches.

The door lights are not working and will go through it again in the future.

The car has “new” type wires, the cloth ones were removed by previous? owner.

I cannot see the forest and the trees……..
Laying there in the wee wee hours where old men cannot sleep….

There is no power connected to the door-switches!
There is an error on the Plasticized Wiring Diagram, plain as day, now.

Question: Is the power for the door light switches piggybacked onto the fuse at the end of the Headlight Switch?

HEY! Don't feel like the LONE STRANGER. Have to drain the lizard every two hours it seems ...

And I stopped drinking P-38's some years back ...

See if the attached shows large enough to read. The PIN (D) is right next to (behind) the fuse holder .

What do you mean by "new type wires"? If your car was rewired by a previous owner with a aftermarket universal harness (for street rods, etc.,), then I feel your pain! Mine was done similarly. Mine has no door switches, & when they put a new headliner in, the dome light was just omitted! WTF??

New type wires: Plasticized

Old Type wires: Cloth? material ? That short out

Luckily the person who wired the Head Liner placed two wires!! I found the second one tucked back from the Dome Light Switch inside the Head Liner.

What alerted me to hidden wire: I found the second wire inside the A pillar at the dash, lucky me.
The work was just not followed through.

Dome Light missing? Don't know how you're gonna wire it w/o removing the front headliner portion? Mine has a mount for the dome light as a cross member .

I've thought about adding Tivoli lights to the side kick panels that would give you floor light.

Also missing on mine was the dash light for the Key and Headlight switch...now the bezels light up at night, neat!

I would like a dome light but, I am NOT going to mess w/the headliner, as it is very, very nicely installed.
I may just wire it up w/under the dash lights, like a ragtop.

Does your 1952 Ford F1 have a dome light? Is it in the center of the headliner? Mine had an aftermarket one installed above the rear window. Where was the original factory dome light on the '52 F1s? I purchased a new headliner to install and it shows a bracket in the center of the roof. Was the dome light attached to this? Does anyone have a picture of the original dome light and location? The bracket in my truck has been removed. There are two flat pieces there and I can re-create, I just need to know how tall the bracket is and what size hole it had. Anyone know? A picture maybe?

where can I get 2 dome lights with switches. for my 30 tudor sedan any ideas?or does anyone have them they would like to depart with

I was exploring the dome light when I purchased a wiring kit from Ron Francis Wiring. They describe the original dome/courtesy light as "reverse" to what is now done. Originally the dome/courtesy light is operated by turning the headlight knob counterclockwise and it grounded the dome light. The dome light is fed positive/hot all the time. The headlight switch completes the circuit to ground. If you have pulled an original headlight switch out of the dash and looked at it, on the end closest to the knob, there is an eccentric that grounds the feed to the dash.
Jwawhite> it is good you have 2 wires now to that location - run one as hot to the dome light and one as ground back to the headlight switch. Should have one terminal for it that runs to the courtesy light switch at front of switch. Are you using original headlight switch? If you are re-wiring and running new set-up you'll need to set up a relay switch to operate dome light.
