Crap in gas tank

Related question, how hard is it to remove the fuel tank on a 47 Tudor? With the body on frame.

It isn't too hard to remove tank if the captive nuts cooperate. If they were like mine, they were buggered up. I finally got it out when I removed part of my rusty trunk pan. Perhaps you are more clever and nimble than me.

Thanks Tinker I found another one ( NAPA ECH FA49) has the ground ******** side and has the screw mount for the coil, looks a lot like the one I have. Al

OK second verse,,I bought a new filter and gas in a clean can. Set it up above engine, started the engine and it does the same thing, backfires misses, when the pedal is pressed down hard. Not the gas, but the tank is dirty and I'll clean it. I just got my dist. back from Bubbas and the coil from Skip. Skip didn't say anything about the condensor so I figured it to be OK. Now I'm thinking ignition because the new gas does the same as before I sent them out to be fixed. There goes the rest of my hair. Could it be timing, kinda sounds like it. The spark plugs fire but look weak sparking, only 1/16th spark to block.

A good ignition will jump at least 3/8" with a blue/white spark. Given the recent coil and distributor rebuild, try a new condenser.

Got tank out, don't look too bad. When you clean the tank do you take out the sending unit to keep it from being damaged? Only 5 bolts holding it in, no problem taking it out. I got lucky, the nut blocks were still in good shape. Blew out the gas line from front to back, no sign of rust just fuel on towel I had put over the line at back. Tank has a brown colored something and a little rust. Al

Talked with Skip he said cond. was good. Told me the valves might be sticking, and to pour some MMO in carb. I put some in throat of carb then give it a good shot that killed the engine, let it soak until I get tank back on car. Thanks Everyone for putting up with my problems. We'll get er done. Al

Best to take the sending unit off while you clean and seal the tank. It would also be a great opportunity to check the float. They do corrode over time.

Sending unit and float look new, even the tank looks like it's been replaced in the past. Has a little rust and some brown clumps of whatever. The gas I drained out looks brownish don't know what would cause that. I had just put Seafoam in it the other day, maybe it loosened some of that crap in the tank. I guess I could make a cover for the guage hole while I treat it. Al

I've noticed some brown stuff if my truck after storing for the winter and using seafoam. My glass bowl caught it, but that's interesting (new tank). Truck runs well however no issues after freeing the valves.

Qne thing about living here on Texas coast I won't have to store mine in winter, feels like summer with AC, just wear a coat and long johns. Al

Found a service station nearby today that sell's non ethyl gas, 92 octane and $4 bucks a gallon. Since I don't drive on long trips think I'll try some, do you think it will damage the engine being that high octane?

Higher octane well not harm the engine, it's not needed, but that's another issue. The benefits of being non-ethanol out weighs any octane issue.

Thanks again for the replies, got tank washed out and it has been coated before. Has a grey color to it and can see where it's built up in places. Don't think it can be recoated over the old sealer. Anyone ever run in to this problem. Al

Your initial post tells me that some of that coating may be coming loose. When you found that stuff in the fuel filter it was a sign of that flakes of that stuff was getting in the gas and then the filter. Had this very thing happen to me some time back. The car sat for a period of time with no gas in the tank. It had been coated at one time. Soon after I put gas in the tank the filter started clogging up and it was the sealer coming loose. I put in a new tank and problem solved. Cleaning out the old tank would have been as expensive as buying a new tank.

I'm beginning to believe you on that. The coating doesn't appear to be coming off, I've shined a bright light inside and used a small mirror to look all around and can't see anything coming off. The stuff that's in there looks like a gun stock finish I used when I built custom rifles ( Stone Creation) grey with specks in it. I may just wash it out good and put it back in. Al

Just ordered a new tank, tired of messing with this one, can see a lot of rust and coating coming off in top of tank. Thanks everyone for the assistance. Al
