Could it be throw out bearing?

My 48 Merc is acting up. Went for a good two hour drive on Thursday with no issues. Went to start it today and heard an awful noise. Sounded like intermittent metal on metal ticking. Noise starts as soon as any pressure is put on the clutch pedal, stops when taking pressure off pedal. Engine and ****** have been re-built. I am afraid to try and put it in gear. Does this sound like a throw out bearing problem? I notice that there is a zerc fitting on the shaft that goes into the bell housing that is rotated by the clutch pedal, would greasing that be of any help? Can a throw out bearing be lubed through the inspection cover on the top of the bell housing? I will pull the floor out tomorrow, any thoughts as to what I should be looking for?
Thanks for your input.

Sounds like a TO bearing to me. there is no way to lube it that know of. the 2 zerks that you mention will only lube the shaft.

How much free play at the pedal ?
If very little, or none, your bearing might have been in contact with the clutch all the time. Cooked the lube out, and now it's dry.

I agree, TO bearing. If the TO bearing hub was not replaced it can be unevenly worn and cause this symptom. Just went through this myself.
