Color Tuned our car.

We have a 1947 Mercury, with dual 97 strombergs on
a Fenton intake. Flathead V8 59AB motor. Headders and duals.
I have been having a heck of a time getting the car to run
right. Seemed to be running lean. I tweeked the adjustment
screws, but could still not get the car to run correctly.
I balanced the carbs with an UNISYS guage first.($25.00)
I have had a Color Tuner kit for about 2 months, but the instructions
were vague to me and there not any pictures on the instructions.
So I finally opened up the box and re-read the info and installed 2 of the 6-7 parts in the box.
All you have to do is to remove a spark plug and replace it with the sparkplug looking device and connect it's lead wire to your spark plug wire. Fire up car ,garage door half open with fan to blow exhaust out,
and light all off. Watch the spark and the color inside that cylinder.
If it is real white, you are running too lean; yellowish, too rich.
You are aiming for a nice blueish color. With 2 carbs, each carb feeds 4 cylinders, so, you need to repeat in a plug in the opposite side of (4)
plugs.
It took me about five mintes per side.
The car runs like it was new. Lots of power, NO backfiring, no stalling,
nice idle.
GREAT PRODUCT!!!!!!!!
This is my wife's car, and she was floored on how well it now runs.
My wife said "How long did you have this Color Tune thing?" duh!

Colortune has been around for at least 30 years that I know of. I first ran across it for setting SU carbs on British sports cars. They are sold by sports car suppliers like Moss Motors etc. Also they are on the internet at Colortune

Colortune

The secret to Colortune is a special, temporary spark plug with a glass viewing window. This lets you actually watch the fuel burning in your cylinder!

A handy color chart tells you whether the mixture is rich, lean or just right. As you adjust the mixture, you'll see the change instantaneously. You can rev the engine and watch the flame color during transitions, too. Use Colortune for your car, motorcycle -- even a tractor -- any engine with a standard 14mm spark plug. An essential tuning tool for carbureted or modified engines. Made in England.

Thanks for the tip displayman!
I just ordered one at autoexpertproducts.com
Dick

Bubba,

You adjust the lean, rich screw on each carb until both
run in the blue shade, which is 14 to 1 ratio.
smooth car, all gears!

Hope this helps.

One of the best methods for adjusting mixture is using a vacuum gauge. Often an overlooked tool, great for checking the internal condition of your engine. Timing among other conditions can be easily checked.

what size adapter do I need for my 8ba flathead.....going to order one just want to make sure I get the right one

The stock fitting that came with the Colortune fit our 59AB perfectly.
You might ask the seller that you find.

Good luck
Bob
