Coil Question

I continue to have problems with the electrical circuit in my A. I notice that the coil gets very warm when the engine is idle and the ignition switch is on. Is this a normal occurance?

Thanks

Bob

Do you mean the engine is idling, or not running at all? If the ignition is on, and the engine is not turning, the points might be constantly open, in which case no current will be flowing through the coil, or they might be constantly closed, in which case the coil gets maybe twice the normal amount of current flowing through it. In that case, it would definitely get pretty warm.

Thanks for the information. It has been a long time since Ihad a car with a coil in it and I am trying to eliminate problems in the circuit. When I have left the ignition on with the engine not running I have noticed that to coil gets very warm and I thought it might mean that it is defective. Based on what you say it must be normal

Thanks

Bob

Bob, Yes it is normal and you want to avoid leaving the key on without the engine running. If the points are closed you will drain the battery.
