Cleaning AirMaze

Good day folks,
I have an after market AirMaze filter with the metal mesh canister. Curious as to what folks use to clean it and if there is anything I need to do to it?
Thanks
Scott

No special procedure needed. Take the screen part and scrub it with dish soap.
Clean as well as the other part that bolts to the carb. It should be clean. But
if there is any gummy gas residue, then spray everything with some carb cleaner.

Mine had degraded over the years from fuel leaking into the carb, so I disassembled it and powder coated the top and bottom plates. I bead blasted the cast part and the wing nut and left them bare. Thinking back on it, I put way too much effort into pretty-ing up a mundane part. I wish the rest of the engine compartment looked as good as that Air Maze does.

I toss the screen and get a real filter.

The potential downside of using a paper filter is that if you ever leak fuel into the carb throat, now you have a gasoline-impregnated sponge just waiting for a spark to ignite it. I don't have sufficient confidence in my float valve, and in myself to always remember to turn off the fuel, to risk that. YMMV.

The tall K&N filter that Y shows works well and is cleanable , etc. Be aware that the airmaze mesh and/or paper element can restrict airflow to the carb. Try running the engine without the short mesh, and one may note the difference in power.

I guess I'm fortunate my carbs don't leak... :p

Yeah, this guy in Germany had the same AirMaze set up you do, but with a leaky carb. He went to start it (after being parked a week in his garage) ....and boom:

As for cleaning the original style wire AirMaze mesh, just clean it in dish soap and water or put it in your dishwasher and it will come out squeaky clean. Then, before you reassemble your AirMaze, spray the mesh filter with some air filter oil (which will help trap some particles as they are sucked through the mesh):

I'm smart enough to shut off my gas when parked. Henry put that valve there for a reason.

I turn off the fuel at the valve also but leaky valves are VERY common these days after nearly 100 years of service. I use a wipe of fuel proof grease to fix them.
That said, we can't use those air filters anyway because the steering column prevents it.

Snychro, I'm hearing you on the valves, I gave up on the stock valve a long time ago, although the newly re-designed "Ball Valve" type valve that Snyder's sells work pretty good. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/product.htm?pid=979339&cat=41707 I added a second ball valve that has never leaked a drop

FWIW, I don't even know why I got into this conversation except to give the OP an option. I stopped using a filter a while ago because I found my Marvel runs better without one, which was not the case when I had a Zenith.

Wow, that looks like a bigger fire than a wet filter. You sure one of those plastic fuel filters didn't melt?

Sure does! I love the contrasting finish. A Marvel carb is in my future after I finish the next eighty-eleven projects I have lined up.
