Cannot get oil pump gear out ?

I have tried to get gear out but no luck. I lift it up into the hole above going to the distributor as far as I can go but the tang at bottom still is in lower block hole about a 1/16". It does not come apart first does it ? Tried prying up more and pulling bottom tang on through but no luck. Thanks Joe B

Tom I am trying to get the whole assy out together ? I am going up into the distributor hole and then trying to clear the bottom tang out of the crankcase. Does the assy come apart first ?

Do it the other way as Tom describes. Tip the top out first and rotate the tang to be parallel with the engine. No need to take it apart.

As Tom said it will clear the relief in the block casting if you tilt it out the front on e it's up high enough.

I tried that but when I get to the top opening and tilt my gear is only about half out of the lower hole. I will try again.

Does your block have the relief in the casting?

It should have enough clearance to come out... here's another scenario that I hope isn't the case... but in the 70's 80's there were some 2-piece distributor drive gears and I've had a couple that were slipped down from the shaft and made it very difficult for removal.
I did get them but they were difficult. It is close but under normal circumstances if once you pull up and when mostly out tilt to the front at the relief it should come out.
Give us a photo.

Ok this is my problem I am at top of lift and slightly tilted out but I still have about half the gear to go. I can get more aggressive but I do Not want to hurt block. Any ideas. Thanks Joe B

I see you point when I put bottom tang parallel with the car front to back it does give it the best chance to come out. But still will not come out. I could get aggressive and pull top out but as you see the gear is still in and worried about chipping out the edge of block ?

In your picture it looks like the tang is a little higher than the top of the
oil pump drive gear sleeve. I looked at a couple of the ones I have and the
top of the tang is about 3/16" to 1/4" below the top of the sleeve.
I tried the ones I have in a block and they went right in and out no problem.

I just saw mention of the tang and realized something,it ain't supposed to be sticking up above that sleeve,It should be recessed in that sleeve, not sticking up.

Thanks everyone for trying to help me. No the top tang is below the top flange. I will try and take the top to the inside as someone suggested. I agree it went in there but it might not have went in there in one piece. I am prepared to take the top pin out if I have to and remove top flange. Since I have ordered a new one(gear is worn) I could grind the back side of flange down to get it out. Like I said I would get more aggressive but if I force that top out that gear left partway in the hole could break out the cast iron block which is not very thick at that point.

I had a gear come loose on the shaft years ago, it would lose timing after starting but I was able to remove the assembly and put in a new shaft. Anyway if your gear is loose it could have worked down and binds when you try to lean the assembly to pull it out. You might see if the gear will move up the shaft some how which would give you room. I looked at a photo that I took of mine and could not see the tang at the top so maybe the whole thing has worked up somehow. It looks like something has moved.

After trying everything I am going to take out the pint at top of gear assy and take apart to remove. I was going to use a grinder to take it out but concerned about sparks getting to gas fumes. Any ideas ? Thanks Joe B.

JBohannon may be on the right track. That gear may have slipped down the shaft just enough to get in the way of a smooth removal.
Seeing as how you are replacing the gear can you grab onto the gear with a pair of channel lock pliers or small vice grips and see it the gear moves up on the shaft?
If it does, try tilting it while holding the gear in the uppermost position.
Please keep us posted on this. I am sure your not the first, or last to have to deal with this.
