Cam condition & cleaning??

The cam out of my '50 Merc block has a slight grove or scratch at the most rear bearing surface. It is as though a piece of grit made the circlular mark at the very edge. If polished, is it still usable? The most worn lobe measures within .0004 of the rest. That seems pretty good to me. What do you say? Also, if usable, can i use a soft, fine brass wire wheel to clean up between lobes and bearings?

Should work out just fine any small groove will fill with oil during operation and will function fine.

Ronnie:rolleyes:

we used to polish overhead cammed foriegn car cyl. head cams , by using the crank polisher... spinning the cam in fixture.. never any problems ... better to polish than to let gritty cams go out..kev

Be sure to check the fuel pump lobe also , I had a perfectly good looking merc cam with almost no lift for fuel pump
