Block patch up job

Sorting through a few of the V8s I've picked up recently I noticed one has a patch up job on the side. Was this a normal repair back in the day?

I think this might have been off a genset.

If it was necessary and it worked it was normal.
Even some V8 60's had sheet metal block sides, only not bolted in place.

I think it is a throttle linkage and would go up to a control panel at the front of the engine. I've got another gen set engine less the generator. I'll see if it is the same.

Or maybe a coe or semi forward control truck type setup? You could imagine a rhd pedal hooking up to that linkage.

Could be a gennie, just throwing another possibility in the mix.

I think in days gone by that lots of engines ended up with fixes like that.

The engine or at least many bits are WWII Canadian military...I think the linkage fits the RHD cab trucks, there is a hole at front og manifold for the Canada only oil filler tube, and the little bulge ahead of that blocks off the PCV hole through manifold...

That was probably a freeze crack repair. Back in the day folks had to do whatever they could to get by with little or no money in their pockets. They were not so quick to just throw things away like most folks are today.

Things like the Ford Barn can be, a double edged sword. Often a question will come up where 5 or 10 guys jump in and say " No, you can't do that. No , if you do it that way, it won't work, and often, they are right.....But it reminds me of the story about Edison's lab, where the joke was, always assign the new Engineer to the, " Frost the inside of the light bulb project. " All the senior Engineers would sit around and laugh, because everyone knew you could never frost the inside of a light bulb....that is, until some new Engineer. who didn't know you couldn't do it. Did just that ! True ? but you get my point

I'd agree with Bruce and say Canadian built COE you can see the boss for the long oil filler in the inlet manifold. My car has one of those oil fillers (NZ assembled ex Commonwealth plant Canada).

My bet it was probably out of the Ford "Blitz" Canadian truck they were RHD and manufactured for the British Commonwealth forces during the war.

Heath Robinson repair.....but if it worked its ok.

Do I see petrified bubble gum on that repair? It amazes me how my grand Dad used to repair things...never throw any thing away ..waist not want not
Id love to see that block in person

Flat (nearly) surface, presumably ends of crack drilled, plenty of bolts and gasket goo... no crazier than a bolt on cylinder head. Common crack that can leave block otherwise ok, as the cylinders on ther side of the pressure are curved and so harder to crack...so the destruction happens on the outside.
