best oil filter

More oil to the timing gear filter = less to the valve chamber reservoir.

The valve chamber is still absolutely flooded to overflow even with the Taylor bypass filter in place. It is a valid system. If you use one it is important to make sure your filter does not require more than a gentle push to open the backflow flap behind the holes circling the center.

I have not looked hard but is it possible to find out what the pressure drop is at a given flow from the filter data? Where is this data available?

Hydraulics education - if you reduce the flow through a device by 50 percent the pressure drop will decrease by 0.5 squared or will be 25 percent. The timing cover system will equilibrate to some unknown pressure drop and the flow will be another unknown.

As you increase the engine speed the oil pump output (flow) will increase directionally in proportion to the speed. The oil pump is a positive displacement type of pump.

Bottom line - either the timing gear style or the side cover style will do an adequate job of filtering the oil for your engine.

Back about 20 or 25 years ago there was an old codger north of Chicago that started producing the side cover style that Bratton and others sell. I don't remember his name and guess that he is gone now. I bought two of his systems from him.

J, I opened the feed pipe up to the next size from the supplied line that comes with the Taylor unit. As Mike says, the valve chamber is still absoultely flooded. For the $75 that this unit costs, no problems here.
