"BEST" head gaskets

Will be installing aluminum heads soon and have Best brand gaskets. Will I need to use some gookumpucky on the gasket?

Your thoughts will be appreciated.

I was told not to with mine. Copper head gaskets you can spray copper seal on them but the graphite style no need too.

Wait for guys that know much more than me to reply.

Just put my engine back together and used best copper gaskets. Sprayed both sides of gaskets with permatex spray copper coat as recomended by best , speedway and summit. Did a lot of research ahead of time. When I put the heads on the first time I used best gaskets with Kevlar and had a bear of a time removing old gaskets. Whatever they coat the gaskets with it glues to the head and the block.

Used copper gaskets with no coating on my recent rebuild with Offy 425 heads. No leaks, but I worry about galvanic corrosion. I put a sacrificial anode in the radiator, attached (grounded) to the cap to hopefully avoid that issue.

Ask Best they will give you the answer you need as they want a happy customer. Not someone that may get a poor response from an internet forum.Peanut butter seems to work ok.

I have always used copper coat on that application, Best Graph Tite gaskets and aluminum heads. One very important thing to remember is you must check the torque of the heads at least once a year, more often is better. If you fail to re torque you will have problems. Aluminum and cast iron expand at different rates and it is critical to re torque often.

Comments: Will your 'Copper Spray-A-Gasket Hi-Temp Sealant cause an electrolysis reaction when used on head gaskets for aluminum heads? The cylinder heads on my engine are aluminum and the block is cast iron. I'm concerned about possible corrosion of my aluminum cylinder heads if I use this product on my head gaskets.

Pete,

No. Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket (Item # 80697) will not cause any form of corrosion as a result of dissimilar metals or presence of antifreeze.

I called BEST and they advised to coat both sides with the copper spray.

Thanks again,

I found an ad from 1936 from Permatex. They put together a 1936 Ford Flathead with no gaskets. They used Permatex on everything. I wonder if anyone ever had to restore this car. Taking it apart would have been interesting.

Good deal that is what they are there for.
Too bad others don't take that idea and call manufacturers for tech info they will give you the straight goods. :)

Well now that we have that solved, did you measure the piston and valve clearance to the head? This should be .045/.050". Next torque to 45 ft/lbs for 3 heat cycles. The reason for doing this id to get a high degree of turbulence into the chamber, just before the spark occurs. Thus more fuel is burned, better econmy and throttle response. Torquing to 45 ft/lbs for 3 heat cycles will insure sufficent clamping force and the three heat cycles will eliminate any variation in torque do to the difference in the block structure (deck thickness).
Now nome of this is necessary, but it does work well

Exactly - just sprayed two of their head gaskets today with Copper-Coat, and installed a new set of Edelbrock heads on a just completed 276 cubic inch street motor.
