Battery-Electrical

Just today I was looking closely at my newly acquired 54 as was surprised to see it is 6 volt negative ground. There is no radio. Interesting that it seems to work fine!

Welcome JohnSunliner! If your generator was polarized that way, it should work fine. It has no ampmeter, does the fuel and temp gauge work right?

The fuel gauge works but the temp gauge shows hot when it is cold and stays there. Makes me wonder why they bothered to change the polarity and stay with 6 volts. Eventually I will go with 12 volt system but don't have a big reason to now.

John,

Is the coil wired properly? It will work but just not as well.

While looking at Barrett jackson auction cars (#685) I saw a nice 54 with a 4 cell battery! That would be 8 volts? I did not know such batteries existed. I suppose it is a way to get a bit more starting power with out completely changing to 12 volts. Kind of strange however.

Those batteries are for golf carts and will give a bit extra on a 6 volt system. Most 6 volt systems charge at about 7.5 volts so the higher voltage battery is not an issue.
