As slow as it seems, I'm working on an AV8 28ccpu for a driver. I will be running the T5 trans mentioned in recent posts but i want the Banjo look under the rear of the pu. Winters has a non quick change version but it is over $3k. I don't have the equipment to machine anything so is the someone out there that can supply a modified original Banjo with moderm=n drum brakes that would be narrow enough for the 28pu? - For less that $3K?

Find a good 39 or 40 rear, use the open drive conversion kit that speedway and others sell. its about three hundred or so . speedway also has a bendix self energized brake package for another four or five hundred, a lot better than three grand.

Or put an add in the swap section for an open drive banjo rear section if you already have a banjo rear.

There out there. Brake conversions are easy and plentiful.

Just keep reading down the Barn until you get to the post on The Hot Rod Works. I do believe you can get what you need from them for under the $3000 mark.

I was hoping to get a few more responces on this rear topic. Pickups expose the rear axle more than other models and the Banjo is my choice for looks. Is the width of the 39-40 unit usuable under the Model A. I thought of posting the same question on the Model A forum but they seem less tolerant of any mods. How about some more input or source for an already modified 39-40 Banjo with modern brakes etc? Surely someone out there has a good setup they are replacing with something stronger.

What about keeping the stock ****** and using a Mitchell Overdrive, bolts right in.
Six bolts in the back, four bolts in the front, back on the road in 4 hrs.
I'm using one in my 41 pickup, with 3:54's. Cruise down the road at 70mph at 2100 rpms. Love it.

i have open drive rear it was under my model a only thing.. is i used backing plates and drums for my other rear ill be going near state college for ist wek end of june pm if interested...thanks joe

How about a little more info? Year of rear unit? What yearnbrakes? What open drive kit used? Emergency brake operable? etc. How much?

Well, you said you didn't want to spend $3K and so far, every response has been one that puts you under the mark. I'm assuming you have the stock rear under your 34 which can be converted open drive and (I think) to juice brakes. The juice brake setup you want is from a 39-48 with backing plates that are loaded, meaning it has the park brake levers and all HW in there and with good drums. Then you can adapt your p-brake setup to the juice brakes.

For further info you might want to read up on some builds over on the HAMB (www.jalopyjournal.com) - there is a wealth of info there as many have built them.

As for me, my avatar has an open drive banjo rear (w/T-5 and 59AB flattie) using a 42-47 Ford truck open drive center and 36 Ford bells. I like the 35-36 bells because since you are removing the t-tube, the radius rods take on a larger roll and "wrap" around the axle to offset forward and rear thrust. I've also "trussed" the rear radius rods where they transition from the "wrap" to the bar. I run a panhard bar and a reduced leaf 40 rear spring in the stock 32 rear crossmember with tube shocks. My rear brakes are 40 juice w/p-brake setup.

The pics show the rear setup in the more-or-less mock-up stages - you can see the trusses adn where I shortened the rear radius rods to mount them in my modified frame. You can also just see the panhard bar.

Good luck and keep us posted ....

Several have misunderstood my original post. The 34pu is not the topic. My current project is a 28ccpu that wil have a '50 Merc flathead w/T-5 trans. I'm looking for a less expensive way to hook up a Banjo (for looks only) with modern wheel bearings, brakes and open drive. I have a Ford 8" but under a 28pu, they don't look that great - thus the Banjo rear.

No, I don't have the original 28 chassis, this is a piece together project that hopefully will become a more reliable daily driver. I was hoping someone was moving towards a stronger rear that already had the mods or a contact that could supply one ready to set in place. I'm retired and don't have the necessary equipment anymore. Thanks for all replies and hope I get a few more.
