amp gAGE question

Bob. The lights and horn are hooked to the alternator. I appreciate all the help . Never had anything like this before. And i am sure when the problem is found, it will be something simple always is.

To bob and steve and all that helped thanks. T dont know what was wrong but after i put the wires back like they were the amp gage started working only backward so i put the yellow on the driver side of the amp and the yellow with tracer on the passenger side it works right now. Thanks jerry

Steve. .... I also noticed every thing works even with the fuse on the starter out, there should only be fire to the starter with the fuse removed.

OK, Jerry, I am totally changing my position. I now believe that we are dealing with a poltergeist. Maybe there's a spirtitualist on the forum that can help out.

Steve

I hate it when things start working and you didn't really find the problem. Now you don't know if the problem will happen again.

Bob

Flamingo. This is what else i got. The same car has a fuse holder at the starter. I use a 30 amp fuse in it, it is bolted down with the two screws on one side of the starter switch on the starter. The starter wire going from the fire wall box to the starter is connected to one end and the wire from the other end is connected to the starter. With the fuse out you should only have fire to the starter. With the fuse in you should have fire to everthing . Problem is weather the fuse is in or out there is fire to everthing. Lights horn car will crank, help!!!!

Bob. I think there might have been a wire toucking or arking from the key switch to the dash . I remember when i put the wires back on the switch i turned the one on the driver side in more then normal. I was begining to believe it was posised to. Jerry

Could you post a picture of your engine compartment so we can see what were
dealing with. I would take the wire from the fuse holder off at the junction box and
see if the wire is still hot or if the stud in the junction box is hot, that should help show where the power is coming from.

Bob

I was going to suggest measuring voltages at all the relevant spots with the key on and off. If you get power at places "downstream" from the key, I might begin to wonder whether there's a fault there. But data would help!

Well i put a new switch and fuse holder on the starter ,now it works . Take the fuse out there is no power to the car . Must have been a short somewere . Thanks everone.

well shut my mouth ! im having the same problem . amp gauge only shows discharge but no charge .......... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm .. steve

Is that so even right after cranking the engine? Turn the lights on for one minute, then start the engine and see if the amp guage shows about 5 to 10 amps for several seconds while recharging the battery.

My generator with an EVR only shows more than 1 amp right after starting, when it goes to about 6 to 8 amps and quickly returns to about 1 amp.
