Air Pressure Gone Missing - Cause?

ive had my tubes in for like 2 yrs , no leaks ! radial type tubes in bias ply tires .

Speaking of valve cores, on a related subject with similar valve cores, I had to fix an air conditioner one time while I worked at the junk yard. When I got done I saw he was missing the dust cap from the filler valve on the A/C, so I grabbed one off a junk car and stuck on for him. He came back a few days later with no A/C, so I refilled his system and checked for leaks. Everything checked out perfect, so I unhooked my guages and reinstalled the dust cap. A few days went by and he was back again. This was starting to get old, as well as expensive. It turned out that the dust cap had some piece of plastic hanging down in the center and it was depressing the valve core when it was installed. It was also depressing me........and I'm glad I found it.:D

I don't think this is only occurring with our A's. The right front tire on my wife's sedan always seems to be a bit low. We've had it back to Discount a couple of times, they've replaced the valve stem twice and it will still be low. She doesn't drive it much, but I have to check it regularly, which I better go do now!

if its an alloy wheel, rim leaks are very common from corrosion at the bead area. very hard to pick up even in the water tank. we break them down and grind the rim with a roloc sanding disc

Green Slime is good stuff. My riding lawn mower tires leaked down in a week. They have stayed full of air for over two years now with Green Slime. I had been living with this irritation for years being careful where I parked etc.

Never heard of the balance problem before the one on this tread.

You won't have a balance problem on your lawn mower but you very possibly will on a car. Do your research and you'll read about alot of problems

Tubes made for radial tires are much thicker and seem to be better rubber with better seams. They cost more but work well in all tires. Bert's sells these tubes. If I remember they are marked "radial" on the valve stem.

I think the problem is simply very poor quality tubes. Send them back to where you got them. I have had the same problem. If enough of us keep sending them back, I would think the suppliers would soon get the message.

I installed 5 new Firestones with 5 new tubes. The first night one was flat. When taken out the seams were wide open. I heard a rumor that Bert's Model A has the best tubes, so I called and talked to Steve. He said he bought 15 different tubes from various suppliers and checked them all out. Many were just plain poor in quality. I am now waiting for a replacement from Bert's. More info to follow. Jay

The best place to get good tubes is from old tires. If air has not gotten to the outside of a tube an old tube will hold up fine. I also always use rubber cement when installing metal stems. Art

Last year I put 5 new Firestones on my sedan but used the 40 year old tubes as they looked like new. They have been holding pressure very well.

Interesting stories! I will recheck my tires today before we head out for an ice cream run and see if we lost any significant amount of pressure in 24 hours. :)

I read where there was a fault in the valve core,a shipment of faulty valves cores were sold in the US (foreign made) ,I had a michelon trailer tire on my 5th wheel that would leak down to 50 lbs in about a week (carried 80 lbs pressure ) discovered very slight leak in valve core ,changed it out .

I am "Dazed" by Tom's wife allowing him to have a tube in the house all winter...wow..would that cause a problem in my house...my head would still hurt.

I had to Slime my tubes to get them to stop leaking...they would go down to 10 or 15psi in just a few days...now they do not leak at all, and ai have not noticed that out of balance condition at all.

Vern,
Had one like that, "O" ring inside chrome cap was turned on edge, causing slight pressure on core stem. Bill W.

Tom,
Pat was appaled when we visited my single uncle, Gump, who tastefully displayed his starters & generators on the lower shelf of his coffee table!
On the top was a completely assembled skeleton of a leatherback turtle that he had boiled for turtle soup previously! (YUM YUM!) Bill W.
