53 Mercury Coronado kit

I’d like to know the value of the Coronado kit on the back of a 53 Mercury. I’m considering buying the car but don’t want the Coronado kit.

They were never offed on Mercury's, only on Fords. You can use a Ford Coronado kit on a Mercury but you it will involve considerable modification, since the Ford and Mercury trunk lids, were not the same shape.

As to the value of one, already on a 53' Mercury, that will be a limited market, maybe $100-$200 to the correct buyer.

Coronado Kit

The car I’m looking at has this garish unit mounted on the rear with a big panel extension, it’s not on the trunk. I’m wondering if I can just take it of and use the same bumper and mount.

That's a real "Continental Kit" and should be worth a substantial amount. A "Coronado Kit" is a crappy little half tire sized sheet metal "bucket" that screws to the deck lid and couldn't hold a tire if it tried. I'm no expert, but I'll bet that's special bumper with extended ends made especially for that specific application. My money is on neither the bumper nor the brackets fitting.

BTW, that looks like a '54 Merc.

Yes it is a 54. Is the bumper usable after the kit removed?
Tim

It appears constructed similar to the continental kit on our 55 T-Bird.....IT should be the same bumper kit or no kit!!!! ON our T-Bird it just added bumper bracket extenders to accommodate the sheetmetal filler & spare tire holder and just moved the standard rear bumper outboard.

I kind of like it!!! ALSO have a flat tire and try and change it lifting in and out of "THAT" trunk. Looks like quite the lift to accomplish that task!!! Just sayin!! Your taste though!!!

Ford38v8, if I buy it, it’s only with the knowledge that I can remove it and restore the car to its original appearance.

I sound like a real pessimist, I'm thinking it would not have a lot of value. My reasoning is that it would take someone with that same model, who really liked it & wanted it. Is that possible, sure. Likely, no. Based on my assesment of trying to sell early Ford parts in the past few years.

Most after market continental kits that I ran across (like on the Merc) use the stock pumper with bumper iron extensions (or different bumper irons) and the extension for the filler panel. I would say that the bumper shown is the stock bumper (merc fans should know)

As far as value, I doubt it has much. Merc's have a small market. The factory FORD coronodo kit has more worth as it was a factory option and quite rare, especially a complete kit

And I am with you on removal. The add on kits had their day, but in my opinion they suck Factory ones, like the 56 bird, are much better looking.

Dean, should be fairly easy to remove. There may be some paint work needed if the filler panels rubbed on the rear quarters or if holes were drilled to attach them there. Tailpipes will need shortened. Biggest concern for me would be rust in the front crossmember. Big job if that needs repaired or replaced. Our 55 Fairlane has a continental kit that was on when we bought it. I wanted to remove it even before we bought the car. It's growing on me. On our 55 it looks like the factory bumper brackets are used with extensions. Looks like it may be a factory kit as it uses the stock hubcap. I'm in agreement with Seth on the value. If you find the right guy...

Thanks for all the input guys. I’m going to pass on this car, I don’t want any surprises trying to take the tire off the back.
