53 Mercury Coronado kit

I took the perect one off my 55 Tbird and had it for salefor over a year for $200. Not one bite . I took it to the dump. Tim

I agree on the looks of the thing….looks like a woman with a huge caboose!…..if I liked the rest of the car, I don’t think I’d let that scare me off…..Mark
I agree Mark. I wouldn't be scared off a nice Mercury if the price was right. The Continental or Coronado kit would not be a deal breaker. Just takes up a little more space in the shed. ;)

Sorry, but it looks real stupid to me.

You need to start thinking like an up-and-coming social climber of 1954! You would likely be the only Merc with a continental kit for several blocks around. Just think how the neighbors would envy you! Your wife could hold her nose extra high as you cruised along!

When I bought my 51 Merc. it had an aftermarket continental kit. Removed it right away and sold it.
The weight of the kit had broken the main leaf in each rear spring.

Not sure IF these body styles of Ford & Mercury experience the same problem with the continental kits BUT our 55 T-Bird with the continental kit on it, and the way it "extends" out like that acts as a rear weight on the car and lightens the front end and steering to the point of loosing front end grip in some instances!!! Add some luggage or weight into the trunk as well and IT can get squirrely on you. TO counter act the problem that 19Forty speaks of, as well as cure the "Chinese butt" syndrome (Drangin' ***) my Dad had an "extra" leaf added to the rear springs to help with the weight issue AND to level the stance of the car to keep it looking like its ready to launch to the moon.

I think this picture, compared to the picture of the '54 in the first post, shows that the '54 has a special bumper with extended ends. The '51 has painted sheet metal "pans" where the '54 has extended ends. Different years, I know, but I don't ever remember seeing any Fomoco bumpers with tips that long.

Which means that in addition to everything else, you would end up looking for a good bumper and having it re-chromed. If I had ever owned that car, (the '51, of course) I'd still have it.

I still have it. It's got a HEMI. Just need more $$ to finish it.
