46 fuel pump

I recently installed an electric fuel pump in my 46, I wired it to a momentary toggle switch to be used as a primer or to overcome a vapor lock situation which is a frequent occurrence in this Florida heat. My car now runs too lean unless I run the fuel elec. pump thru the mechanical pump. If I bypass the mechanical pump, and remove it, I naturally would remove the pushrod. Will this effect my oil pressure? Many years ago I tore down a 59 block and there was a ground down bolt jammed into the pushrod hole, I always wondered why, Did some old timer know something we don't? By the way my now gone dad used to say " a cold beer was the best cure for vapor lock" I don't remember if you were supposed to poor it over the carb and fuel pump, or just sit there and drink it until your car cooled down! Thanks Rich

My first question would be if you installed an electrical fuel pump which offers no resistance to fuel being drawn through it. Take it off and see if you can blow through it easily. Some will block flow. That could make it hard for the mechanical pump to keep the carb fuel bowl full and cause the engine to run lean. Suspect #2 would be a partially clogged fuel filter. Third would be a flexible fuel line from firewall to pump that has swollen internally, due to alcohol, presenting partial blockage. If all of these things are okay and the mechanical pump is not keeping up, maybe it needs a rebuild.

Just curious how you have determined it is running too lean now.

When I press down on the gas pedal, it falters and backfires, hit the pump switch and smoothes right out.

I installed a flow through pump on my 50 about a month ago, I only run it on hot starts. Mine runs fine with the electric turned off. I was having fuel bleed back to the tank, the electric pump check valve solved both problems. This is a similar pump to what I have.
