4 Blade Fan Keyway

I recently salvaged a 4 blade fan from a '29 parts car, history unknown. While cleaning up the fan, I noticed that there was a small recess (about the size of a woodriff key) adjacent to the main key way at about the same location as where the woodriff key would be. Upon fit up on my '29 roadster water pump shaft, it appears that woodriff key does not slide into the recess (when attempted to twist on the shaft) and fan seems to fit firmly on the shaft as it should.

Has anyone run across this key way arrangement or situation with a 4 blade fan (or other device)? Is it safe to proceed with using this fan blade without a solid key way (ie: one without the recess)?

Thanks in advance for any experiences or advise you can provide.

I would toss the 4- blade & buy a new aluminum 2- blade from the vendors. Almost no chance of breaking a blade & the WP will be easy to change without removing the rad.Just place the blades crossways & swing the WP up after pushing the rad forward to the HL bar.

I agree with Columbia !! A new aluminum 2 blade fan is your best and safest bet. I've run the old model 46 four blade fans with bad key ways. Being as the water pump shaft is tapered, the fan will usually tighten up and work. The riveted 4 blade fans are really worse about slinging a blade than the original prop fans. I've had two of the riveted fans fail, one messed up a new hood and cut several flues in the radiator. I would not run the four blade fan.
