I'm replacing the axil seals on my 1939 Ford rearend and I cant find any information on which side of the seal goes toward the differential. This is the seal that installes in the axil tube from the inside. Thanks for your help.

There is a seal on the inside of the axle housing, not real easy to get to- That is the one that retains oil in the differential... To replace, split the axle house from the center (banjo) Drive seal toward what would be center, new one goes in same way... The seal in the drum holds the grease in the drum, lip goes in... Any more questions, just ask...

If you look at the seal, you'll see that the lip of the seal points to one side. If pressure is applied to that side of the seal, it will hold the lip tight against the axle and prevent any flow in that direction. If you were to put pressure applied to the other side, the pressure would lift the lip away from the axle and allow flow in that direction. For that reason, you want to install the seal with the LIP FACING THE DIFFERENTIAL. This will allow any pressure in the wheel bearing grease to vent into the differential instead of blowing out through the hub seal into the brakes.
