3.54 gears

I'm trying to find 3.54 gears. I've got the rear out of my 35 and want to put a set in. I've called all the vendors and nobody has any. I'm hearing a lot of "they are on order" for quite a while.

Do they all come from the same company in Italy? Is it Motive gear?
Does anybody know why the supply dried up?
Does anybody know who has them available?

Thanks, Butch

Baxter Ford in Kansas used to stock them.Theirs are Motive made in Italy.Try also The Early Ford Store in San Dimas,CA 909-305-1955.He had a NOS set a few months ago.

I bought mine from Speedway. They are made by Getz(?) in Italy. So far they have been trouble free and made a big improvement in my `35. You will most likely need a ten to six spline adaptor for your driveshaft too.

I went the cheap way and fitted a 3.78 set from a 48 ford into my 33 ,cant tell the difference to my 34 which has the 3,54,and the 3.78 was free.

I talked to Speedway, they tell me they no longer sell them. I know you guys all got yours somewhere. But there doesn't seem to be any out there.

I got the last 3.54s off the shelf from MACs a few weeks ago they are Motive Gear made in Italy am just in the process of fitting they look well machined.

Put a wanted ad in the swap section for an original set of 3.54 gears with 10 spline pinion. If you could find a set of those, you would not need to modify the internal splined end of your tubular drive shaft. It took me between 6-8 months to find a set of 3.54 gears w/10 spline pinion that were reasonably priced. They are out there, keep looking, something will turn up.

Yes John, good idea. I would suppose that 10 splines are pretty hard to come by in 3.54. I can deal with the driveshaft tho with a 6 spline pinion.

Case of C R S how do I figure what Ratio I have ??
I get as far as counting the teeth on the ring and pinion.
But after that DAAAAAAAAAAAA.
I have some match sets and some sets that are apart on seperate shelf's
How do I tell what ring go's with what pinion???

Bill, that's a shocking question or two right there (you gotta' be getting bored with those shock comments by now :)). Count the number of teeth on the ring gear and pinion. Divide # of ring teeth by # of pinion teeth = gear ratio. When Ford or there gear suppliers matched ring & pinion sets they would take the number that was cast or stamped on the trunnion of the pinion gear and etch that same number on the back of the ring gear in pretty large numbers. Sometimes I have really had to get this surface on back of ring cleaned up good to bring that number out. I even recall having to glass bead some to get that number to show up.

Bill,
The differential housing is stamped with the ratio from the factory. 37 divided by 9 equals 4.11 to 1. Any changes made thereafter may or may not be stamped.

Since you're in Ballston Spa, NY, you've probably already tried them, but I bought a set a few years ago from Early Ford V8 Sales in Ballston Spa, NY.

If you can find the '35-'48 gears, it is possible to have the machine work done on them to fit them to the '34 rear, that's what the aftermarket suppiers are doing anyway. There's another thread here on the 'barn about what is required to do that.
