Sounds like your pumps are the bushing type which is good. You pull the pulley
forward and is springs back when you let it loose. This is from the centrifical
force as the engine speeds up. This movement helps keep it clean and pushes
the seal tighter against the seat. The bearing type pumps don't move. The bushings
are precision reamed to one and half thousandths larger and the SS hard shafts are ground to exactly .500 The gives 3/4 of a thousandths clearance between the shaft
and bushings. There is this film of oil between the shaft and bushing, the shaft runs
on this oil film NEVER touch the bushings. If the fan belt is pulled up real tight wit
a big bar the oil can be squeezed our up towards the generator and wear the
bushings. I have seen them so tight the wore through the bushing and into the
pump casting. Contrary to what people think the pumps never leaked. As shown
in the pictures the man changed the pumps because the pulley was making noise
when it was scraping on the pump housing. The belt adjustment picture should
show an over all movement of 1" between the 2 doted lines. When a bearing pump
fails it's a new pump or the tow truck, a bushing pump will usually get you home
