1939 water pumps again

Just need to know is it normal that the water pump pulley moves forward when you accelerate and back again when rpm ties down. Pumps are newly rebuilt, movenrnt is about 1/8 inch, funny thing is that the other pump does not move, both are rebuilt. The car is a 1939 Ford Deluxe 85hp.

Doesn't sound normal to me, Mike. Sounds like the shaft might have been reinstalled incorrectly during the rebuild.

Sounds like your pumps are the bushing type which is good. You pull the pulley
forward and is springs back when you let it loose. This is from the centrifical
force as the engine speeds up. This movement helps keep it clean and pushes
the seal tighter against the seat. The bearing type pumps don't move. The bushings
are precision reamed to one and half thousandths larger and the SS hard shafts are ground to exactly .500 The gives 3/4 of a thousandths clearance between the shaft
and bushings. There is this film of oil between the shaft and bushing, the shaft runs
on this oil film NEVER touch the bushings. If the fan belt is pulled up real tight wit
a big bar the oil can be squeezed our up towards the generator and wear the
bushings. I have seen them so tight the wore through the bushing and into the
pump casting. Contrary to what people think the pumps never leaked. As shown
in the pictures the man changed the pumps because the pulley was making noise
when it was scraping on the pump housing. The belt adjustment picture should
show an over all movement of 1" between the 2 doted lines. When a bearing pump
fails it's a new pump or the tow truck, a bushing pump will usually get you home

Thanks GM, so movement per rpm is normal? Yes, these are bushing type. Why does the other pump pulley move and other one not?

I stand corrected, Mike. GM knows his stuff...and pumps!! It is curious, however, that only one pump is doing it. I have a pair of Skip's pumps and I never noticed any movement as you've described your experience.

I tried pulling the pulleys by hand and they both move forward with ease, however the left more than the right side which is maybe why it is more noticeable.

Everything is pretty much precise when doing the pumps except
when the impeller and pulleys are pressed on. Your doing this in
an arbor press and isn't easy to control. If the movement is to
great the out put pressure and flow drop.1/8" is about perfect.

My 21stud with 59A type pumps has been doing that since the year dot. I have always been amused by it but judge it to be normal.
