1937 model 74 blowing the blues

How did you bend a valve doing a compression test??

The piece that you screw into the head had a too longer screw in part. Frustrating as I looked at it and thought that could hit a valve, did the first one fine and then absolutely stupidly screwed the next one in further against my better judgement. I'm devastated at my moment of stupidity but thats what happens when someone that doest know much about engines, plays with them.

Big lesson learnt.

I would be inclined to get rid of the 60 horse and replace it with a 221, 85 hp engine. The 60 hp engine is just too whimpy for me.

Yeah Seth, I had someone else say the same. I'm in Australia and a transplant isn't just that easy to source plus I am trying to keep it strictly original.

My first tactic for finding less common Ford parts is to look up the Ford part numbers in a manual, then start searching the internet. Keep an eye on that auction site too, a surprising amount of stuff is being listed as parts stashes are being moved on by the next generation these days.

I'm new to engines but if it was the valves wouldn't there be a tonne of smoke on start up? and wet spark-plugs? Theres no smoke on start up, and dry plugs.
When the manifold was taken off we checked for stuck valves and got them all looking good (there were two stuck).

Smoke on start up to me means its guides.

I have some oddball (since I don’t have any 60’s) valves, if I knew the overall length maybe that’s what they are. Longer than my 21 stud mushrooms. Can have them if fit

There is a regional Ford V8 Club in Queenslqnd ,Australia. They are quite active and I'm sure could help you out.

I just sent you a PM with their contact info.

Hey Deuce lover, yes, I received that and emailed Max straight away. The wider I throw the net, the better the chance of catching something. Thanks for your help.
