0il pan removal

Hi guys , my first question here . I have a 55 Country Sedan with 272 OD have just changed head gaskets and want to pull the oil pan to remove crud and change gasket. The manual says take out the pan bolts , be sure #1 is on TDC remove oil line and remove the pan. Did that but there is only 3/8 inch clearance between the crossmember and pan.. I see there is a large multishaped bracket on the very front of the engine ,with 2 spring mounted bolts . Does this have to be loosened/moved or engine and or ****** raised somehow? Would be a lot easier on a hoist obviously , not so much on the floor
This is my first Ford , used to be a chevy guy , these fords a quite a different animal than a sbc, but I'm learning a lot and anticipate a great wagon .. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated . thanks Fred

I have never tried to remove the pan with the engine in the chassis. That being said, my 55 had the front bracket (steady rest), removed and left off. I bought new side motor mounts, and ran two 5/16 bolts through them left one turn loose but double nutted for safety.

You need to drop the drag link down for more clearance. You can do it from either end but I found it easier to unbolt the idler arm from the frame. If there are shims between the idler arm bracket and the frame be sure to put them back.

finally got it out , crossmember clearance was my issue , I had to unbolt all mounts and jack up on the steady , and block it there to remove the jack , then it came out .. thanks for any and all replies Fred
