I have no spark while cranking and in my original post I asked if a bad condenser could cause this. Car was running and shut down as if the ignition was turned off.

i have done this and no spark. i have also measured the point resistance with points closed and got almost zero.

This has me baffled as I know coils and condensers often fail when hot but car ran for 30 secs and abruptly stopped.

as a lad i recall my dad taking a shovel of hot coals from the coal furnace and tossing them under the engine when car wouldnt start in the winter, he had a very bad temper and didnt want to be late for work. i dont remember if it worked.

i bought one a few years ago and it looks official. they are still available on ebay.

measure the voltage at coil while cranking, if low bypass the resister and try again. if still low your starter may be drawing too much assuming your battery is good.
