This is correct…..the small lip should be positioned to the front side. There was an old Ford exploded parts drawing that showed it fitted to the rear but that was clearly incorrect. I corrected the drawing for our website. Having rebuilt literally hundreds of the early transmissions, I know for...

New worm is available, as well as the new worm and shaft (already pressed together). Lastly, the sector roller is also available as a kit to replace that component in the sector shaft assembly. We stock these items as well.

The removal of the tail housing is very similar to the process used on the R-10 type housings. The lockout shaft must be pulled out on all BW overdrive units but there are some subtle differences. Generally, if the entire transmission was made by BW (ie T-86 and T-85) the lockout shaft can be...

All Borg Warner whole OD transmissions were made with the 1-1/2” round expansion plug for access to the rear bearing snap ring (this includes their T-85 and their T-86 models). To remove this plug you can use a sharp chisel to punch a small hole in the plug (towards the rear of the plug) and...

Many vendors, including us, have NOS and NORS parts available from time to time. It’s not typically something that is in large quantities and can come and go in our stocks. We have NOS stuff when we find it…..and there’s no rhyme, reason, or set schedule for when that occurs. There are two...

Flat sides as made by Ford.

There could be a problem with one or both of the expansion springs that hold the inserts outward. That would really require the disassembly of the synchro unit to inspect the parts. Also, for whatever it’s worth, in the last photo (showing the 3 location) it’s very evident that the 3rd gear...

We are safe and all family members accounted for. Karl......that's good advice for everyone. We are in a rural area so we planned for power outages many years ago with the standby generator. All big trees around the building were removed to keep the structure clear. Disasters can find other ways...

Yesterday's big storms roared through Greater Cincinnati, causing lots of tree damage and power outages. Our power is back on but there are intermittent blips, so you may have some difficulty reaching us for a day or so. Calls going to our voicemail right away, and calls that we answer getting...

Will and I recently removed the studs from a core block…..actually two of them. There were a couple studs that were already snapped off. The studs that were still intact were given the electric induction heater treatment. They ALL came loose after a couple minutes each with this tool. I would...

We have a 1954 Ford 3 speed transmission in the shop for a rebuild. I noticed a small metal tag that was riveted to the side of the gearbox. The tag referenced a catalog number and included the preprinted name of the rebuild shop. The name was “M & Z Transmission Exchange” and included its...

If possible, please post a picture of the serial number location so others can compare that to what is generally expected. Blur out a couple digits if you’re worried about that.

Years ago I was trying to view the serial number on a 39 Standard Coupe that I had purchased. I just couldn’t seem to find the number in the usual steering box location. I was doing a complete tear down of the vehicle so everything was coming off. It wasn’t until I removed the hard line to the...

Thanks! We’ve been out of town the past week and are now home. So, regular programming will resume. A good life goes on.

There are numerous little errors and needed fixes that often pop up on websites of this size. The “Links” link page has not been updated for years and I really need to remove this link. There are some dead connections that will be fixed eventually. Everything else seems to be working well at...

Just an update on the change….. move actually was made over this past weekend and appears to be working. You may find that some photo images are not working. Your computer’s memory is easily updated for the whole website…..from the homepage, click on the red button for the STORE. This will take...

The factory snap rings for the two ball bearings were 0.075 to 0.077” thick. The snap rings that most mfrs place on today’s bearings are 0.064” thick. That’s 11 to 13 thousandth difference…..on each bearing location. This is a big deal and is the reason we started to have them made to the...

We'd like to give everyone a heads-up that we are moving the site to a different server this weekend. The move may occur Thursday evening or Friday morning. Obviously, we hope that there will be no problems and it will be seamless to the users of the site. However, we will be monitoring the...

One further test you could do is to remove the solenoid from the OD adapter. Leave the wires connected to it and add a temporary ground wire from the solenoid base to any nearby good ground. With the ignition switch on, ground the governor. This should pop the plunger out and hold it there as...
