My car and I are back

My 1930 Tudor sat in the garage for the past four years. Recently, a friend who is a natural car whisperer got it running again. I bought the car ten years ago and greatly enjoyed it for the first six years. This involved some serious repairs to the brakes, engine and electrical. My go-to place...

    Grit in motor oil

I friend recently bought a 1929 roadster. It had not run for a long time, but the previous owner got it going and my friend drove it home. The first thing we did was change out the fluids. When we released the oil I noticed a gritty substance on the inside of the drain plug. It had the feel of...

    Sickening screech

My 1930 Tudor has developed a sickening screeching sound. It happens at random (although getting more frequent) while driving at highway speeds. It sounds like metal-on-metal and lasts about two seconds -- not enough time for methodical diagnosis. When it happens it sounds like it is coming...

    Brake shoe identification

A previous, unknown, owner converted my 1930 Tudor to hydraulic brakes. The linings are worn down and it is time to replace the shoes. The trouble is, I don't know whether they are 1939-41 or 1946-48. Questions: 1. It is possible to tell from the attached photos which type they are? 2. Can...

    Rear hub puller comparisons

Does anyone have experience using these two types of rear hub pullers? 1. An exact copy of the K.R. Wilson Tool at $148. 2. An economy style item at $33. Is the expensive one more effective or reliable than the cheap one? Thanks.

    Rare winter pics with A

Thanks to the miracle of Global Warming, we are snowed in here in Georgia. I took the occasion to photograph my car in the rare white stuff. In preparation for this photo shoot I had to shift my two vehicles around. The A made it to its appointed spot and then back into the garage. My 1998...

    Knocking sound

Car makes a regular knocking or pounding sound at startup. Gets faster as engine revs. Nearly disappears when clutch is pressed in (disengaged). Disconnected fan belt and made no change. Does this sound like a clutch issue?

    Alternator tension brace

I bought a 12-volt alternator from one of the major parts houses. It included a mounting bracket which mounts the unit where the generator was. This worked out fine. It also included a tension brace, pictured below. Can anyone explain how this should be mounted? Thanks

    World's smallest car show

There is an old Vaudeville joke that goes like this: "I come from a place so small we don't even have a town drunk. We all have to take turns." Well... I live in a town too small to mount a car show, so I just did one myself. Actually, I piggybacked on "the area's largest yard sale." For $10...

    Bendix question

The Model A Bendix includes a large spring. What is its purpose? Does it function by stretching out, or by twisting around the shaft? Is there any detailed explanation of the unit somewhere on the Internet, preferably with illustrations?

    Bendix replacement advice?

Having gone down a blind alley with the so-called modern Bendix (see thread), I am going back to the original design, but prefer a replacement since the original is not in very good shape. Mac's offers a replacement for the original Bendix. Catalog says US made. Item number B11350N Catalog...

    Flexible Magnetic Pick-Up Tool

Any observations on such tools? Earlier today I thought I had dropped a lock washer into the bell housing. Found it later about six feet away on the concrete floor where it had rolled under an obstruction. Anyway, it got me thinking about retrieval tools.

    First eBay experience

I tried my hand at eBay last night for the first time, going after a Zenith carburetor. I lost in the last few seconds. Two savvy bidders swooped in and took over, leaving me in a cyber ditch. It occurred to me later that, considering the item in question, the bidders in this particular...
