    Rear carrier warped

I believe the rear emergency brake carrier is warped on my 1931. Is it possible to fix this or is it a replace only? I have earlier bands without the tabs available, are these ok to use or do I need tabbed ones and can you mix them on different sides left/right? Many thanks

    Rear brake arm binding

I purchased new camshafts for the rears and reusing the existing service brake arms. After assembling with the rivets I discovered I forgot the dust ring. So I dissembled and purchased the dust ring. Problem is when I try to install, the service arm is binding when i try to spin it...

    torque tube to banjo bolts

Do any of the vendors make the correct bolts for the torque tube to banjo? I broke one today and need a replacement. Otherwise, any ford barners have an extra they could ship me? Rudy

    Is this bearing reusable

Attached is a picture of the bearing that runs in the front of the torque tube. I read that the repro’s are not that good and to use the original if possible. There is a bit of putting on the one roller but otherwise it appears fine. Should I replace it? Rudy

How to remove blasted carrier bearings without ruining them

I have been working on the rear diff and I knew I had to add shims under the carrier bearings due to them having spun. The machine shop had them knurled and estimated how much they took off. So I assembled the carrier with the shims and installed the bearings. Low and behold, with .046 in...

    Measuring carrier bearing preload

I've been trying to measure the carrier preload using a variety of gaskets. It's not that easy determining the reading but with 3x10 gaskets I get around 10-12 in lbs. When i use 2x10 + 1x6 it reads around 20-22 but as I'm turning it seems the carrier grabs and the it jumps to 30+ is it...

    Rear diff rebuild process question

I've read all the Tom Endy procedures but I have a question as to why you have to make sure the carrier locks up as the first step. Why can't you just start with the gaskets installed and check for the torque on the carrier. If you set it up and can get the correct drag on the carrier...

    Carrier bearing shim

I’m in the need of additional shims behind the bearings on the carrier. Anyone know if there is a part number for the shims but carried at the local autozone or equivalent? I got mine from Snyder’s but if I have to order, then I will be waiting till next week. Trying to get the assembly...

    Diff assembly coming soon

I got all my parts cleaned up and new parts arrived. The carriers were knurled and next step will be assembly. I also made trial bearings to aid in figuring out how many shims I will need. Once I figure that out I will install the new bearings. Wish me luck.

    Tabs on rea e-brakes

On my rear brakes the ebrake "backing plate" has tabs where the brake band rides on. I think those were added in 30 or 31 (mines a 31). However one side in bad shape. I have a used one from an earlier vintage car but without the tabs. Do the tabs make any real difference and can I mix and...

    Banjo saga continues

So I completely disassembled the carrier and i removed all the bushings and races . The only thing i couldn't do was to remove the pinion gear from the drive shaft. At first i though the carrier bearings were tight. But once I took the axles off I could turn the inner part of the bearing by...

    Preload spider gear alternative

Hello barners. In reading Tom Endy`s instructions he talks about using an old modified spider gear during the preload trial and error settings. Does anyone have an alternative method as I don't have an old spider gear nor a lathe to drill one to create his tool. Thanks Rudy

    Id number on carrier

Any ideas what this number means, it doesn’t match the other half of the housing. Looks like it says D6-415

    Banjo with no gaskets

So today I took the banjo apart in order to inspect the bearings and gears. My plan was to just clean it up and use the same thickness gaskets in order to avoid all the steps required to set the pre load etc. To my surprise neither side had any gaskets to speak of. Did Ford always use...

Rear brakes rubbing - axle shim?

I took off the rear brakes and I found what appears to be rubbing of the shoes and ebrakes against the drum. A few questions. 1 Will a shim on the axle fix this? 2 can I still use the drum if it’s within tolerance? I have some grooves it it now from the brakes 3 I had alot of grease and...

    Frame straightening

My Tudor frame was off by about quarter inch on drivers side. I tried the heat method with success. The most difficult part was figuring out how hot to get the metal and where to heat. My first attempts were not heating enough and I had no movement. Once I applied more heat I started seeing...

    Broken Spring

I never noticed the front was cracked until I took it apart. I was surprised at how little tension there was and then I found several cracked. Strangely enough all the broken ones are replacements (i.e. have the square ends). Anyone ever experience the replacements break but the originals are...
