    Ammeter needle movements

Should the ammeter needle move slightly negative when I turn the ignition switch on indicating the ignition switch is making contact? When cranking the engine should the ammeter needle make a large move toward discharge? If I am charging the battery with battery charger, should the ammeter...

    Starter Switch Test

The starter key switch has armor all the way into the bottom of the distributor. I already replaced the spark coil with a new one. Still have no spark so I think the starter key switch has gone bad. Before going to all the trouble of replacing the key switch, I want to test it but the armor...

    Checking for Spark Solo

My Model A cranks but won’t start. Getting lots of fuel to the carb. I’m all alone and I need to see if I’m getting a spark to the plugs. Is there a way to do this solo?

    Runs rough

Spark plugs good, fuel is fresh, points good, starts and idles good, manifold vacuum is sealed but it runs rough on the road. When I accelerate, it misses and stumbles like it wants to die so I end up limping home at about 20 mph. Is there a way to see if the condenser needs replacement? Other...

    Engine misses, stumbles

Standard 4 banger engine in my 31 coupe. The plugs look good and so do the points. When it warms up a little it starts missing /stumbling when I step on it a little. The manifold vacuum tube is not loose or leaking. It starts and idles fine. Maybe needs a new condenser...is there an easy way to...

    6 v pos grand alternator

This Delco modification never generated a charge and so the battery kept running down. I don't remember who I bought it from (before cancer 4 years ago). Anybody know who can debug this or do I have to buy another one? Sorry for the poor photo and upside down. 6 volt Delco 1 wire positive ground...

    600R16 vs. bias ply tires

My 31 Coupe has the 16 inch wheels and I'm considering buying new tires for it. Can anyone tell me if replacing the old bias ply tires with radial tires will improve the ride? A set of radials will be about $120 more than the bias ones I think. Are they worth it? What do you think?

Black walls or white walls ?

I am so tired of the 6 white walls on my 31 coupe because they are yellowing. I have tried everything to make them look nice and white but maybe they are just yellow with age? Anyone else have this old-tire yellowing problem? Also it is impossible to clean the White Walls in the fender...

    Oil Filler Tube

My oil filler tube has baffles in it. I take it those are to keep oil from splashing up and out of the breather cap. I notice that a LOT of smoky oil fumes normally come out of the breather. The fumes are normally HEAVY to the point where they come up through the floor boards and can be seen...

    Adjusting 39 Ford hydraulic brakes

My 31 Coupe has 39 Ford hydraulic brakes on it. My pedal travel is excessive (only 2 inches of travel left to floorboard) so I'm finally going to have to learn how to adjust them. Anyone know of easy instructions that a lazy bonehead like me can follow to get this task done?

Brake adjustment of 31 Coupe with 39 Ford hydraulic brakes?

Where can I find out how to adjust the brakes on my Model A equipped with 39 Ford hydraulic brakes. My brake pedal has way too much free travel now that the brake linings have broken in from a couple thousand miles of driving. Do I have to remove the tires and wheels? Or is there a way to...

    Ford Spoke Wheels

My Model A has been converted many years ago to hydraulic brakes. The tires have the same rolling radius as the original wheels but the rims are smaller in diameter I think. The benefit I think is to get a slightly softer ride from the slightly "fatter" tire. Does anyone know what year Ford...

    Model A Electric Motor Drivetrain?

I have a 31 Model A Coupe which I drive around town for fun but I have my eye on a 31 Model A 4-door Sedan (Murray body) to convert to an electric Model A drivetrain. Has anyone tried taking out the engine and putting in an electric motor and batteries instead? I have a 4-Door Sedan in mind for...

    Windwing

There a two types of windwing mounting brackets to choose from. The first requires drilling through the paint to screw on the brackets. The other has brackets which fit into the channel so I won't have to drill through the finish paint. Do these interfere with rolling the side glass up and...

    Shorted out alternator!

Thank you Ford Barn experts for helping me find out why my 31 Coupe would not start! Turns out that the fuse, mounted on top of the left front frame rail, was blown! Wow, what caused that? I disconnected the alternator wire and put a new fuse in and she started and ran fine. Of course the...

One man checking for spark at connection to plug?

How does one person check for spark at the plug connection? Background: I backed my 31 out to go to a meeting last Saturday. I noticed the paint had some dust on it when I got it in the sun. I left it idling, running just fine while I wiped her off and put some Wesley's on the white walls...

    Door lock keys

I tried to get keys made for the pass door handle but the locksmith said that there is corrosion or something, the tumblers are stuck and he can't get a blank to go the hole. Is there a way to fix this or will I need to buy a new handle with keys?

Door lock question from a Model A rookie

Please excuse my ignorance. I got a 31 coupe about a year ago and have it running now so that I'm getting a lot of confidence that I can drive somewhere and get back home without breaking down. It is exhilarating! Now that it runs reliably, I got into to town to work out, get groceries...

    L-shaped throttle linkage rod

I see the photo of an L-shaped throttle link rod in one of the shop manuals I have. It is captioned as an "original throttle linkage" but the photo is completely out of place in the shop manual, being in the steering section. I want to know if any of you know where I can get one of these. The...
