    New Category "Well-known Member"

In the old Barn (old = last week!) there were I think three categories of member based upon number of posts: "New Member", "Member" and "Senior Member". I see that we have apparently picked up another category of "Well-known Member". Does anyone know the criteria for these? I've moved from...

    Boy do I feel silly

We're here partly to learn from mistakes, right? In that light, I offer the following: I have been chasing an oveheating issue for over two years. It first became apparent on our trip from California to and from New Mexico for the (aborted) National Meet in 2024. Albuquerque was high (5300...

    Axle dimension?

Does anyone have an original drawing and can tell me what the nominal and tolerance diameters for the rear axle at the grease seal location are? I'm helping a club member rebuild his differential and one axle is a real bear to get through the grease seal. I'm thinking it may be an aftermarket...

Installing starter ring gear on Burtz flywheel

I know we've discussed this topic lots of times, but I have a couple of data points to share on installing the starter ring gear on Burtz flywheels. All temperatures reported are from my IR thermometer I got off the river store - a cheap one, not a good one like a Fluke. Trial 1: I put the new...

Hmm, that's a new one to me

I recently noticed a sluggishness in the response to throttle - both in the pedal and in the hand throttle. I had to move both a considerable travel to get anything to happen rpm-wise. I got to poking around and finally noticed that when the throttle pedal was depressed, or the throttle handle...

Model A Spark Plug Heat Range Table

I remember seeing in the past a table or list showing the relative heat ranges of Model A spark plugs, from coolest to warmest (or the reverse). I thought it was in the Les Andrews Red Book but I couldn't find it when I looked the other day. I'm currently running Motorcraft TT10 in what I think...

    Distributor wire size?

Does anyone know what the size is of the wire from the lower plate to the points is? My guess is either 14 or 16 gauge, stranded. I need to order some. I'm aware it should be "test lead wire" with the flexible silicone insulation and stranded. Thanks, all.

    Started getting ads on FordBarn?

It used to be that if you signed into FordBarn you wouldn't get ads. For the last several weeks that hasn't been the case with me, I get ads within the postings and also on the main screen. Anyone else having this issue?

    Brasswrks question

Brassworks offers an option on their Model A radiators of "formed relief in fins and sidewalls" which is "an embossed sidewall that fits to the hand scalloped fins like OE". They want an additional $175 for this option. Does this serve any practical purpose other than for the person who wants...

How were frames originally riveted - hot or cold?

So today when replacing frame members, flanges, etc. we use hot riveting to do so. Were the frames originally hot riveted together, or cold riveted using high strength presses?

    Burtz flywheel housing available

The new Burtz flywheel housing is now available on the burtzblock.com website. Scroll down, there's a link at the bottom of the home page. I saw the prototype earlier this year and it is very impressive. Reinforcement around the flange that bolts to the engine, where original housings typically...

    Switched circuit

So along with thinking about installing a Weber carb (separate thread) I know I’ll have to install a pressure- regulated fuel pump. I was thinking of taking power for the fuel pump from the switched (distributor) side of the ignition switch, possibly through a relay. Has anyone done it this way...

    Weber carb?

So: 1930s block, 0.040” oversize, Jim Brierley 0.340” “C” touring cam, recent ring and valve job, 5.2 head (installed in a 1931 S/W Town Sedan, Mitchell O/D). Will I see a significant increase in performance by switching from standard Zenith carb to a Weber downdraft? Experience trumps...

    I'm confused...

not at all an unusual situation, but I'm hoping someone here can enlighten me. Over the years, and coincidentally twice in the last couple of weeks, I've posted in the Swap Meet for a part I need. Almost immediately (within minutes or hours) I'll get multiple responses on the order of "I have...

    1929-1931 Brake Lightg Switch wanted

UPDATE 6/24 - I think I have this covered, thanks for all who checked. Looking for an original or high-quality repop brake light switch that was used 1929-mid-1930, but will take 30-31 if available. I'm looking for the one with the bushings where the shaft goes through the housing. These used...

    Westcott Auto Frame Dimension Diagram

Does anyone have file of the Westcott Auto frame dimension diagram that used to be posted on the interweb? That site became unavailable several years ago, and I thought I had the file saved - but didn't. Thanks a million.

    Model A Boneyard

I have a vague recollection that at one time there was a large Model A boneyard located somewhere in the Pacific Northwest - Spokane, maybe, or perhaps Montana? Anyone know what I'm talking about, and if so have contact info? Or am I hallucinating again? Thanks.

    1930 frame wanted

Looking for a good straight 1930 frame for my Town Sedan restoration project. If you have one in your parts pile, here's your chance to clean it out! Thanks in advance. John Seabury jseabury@pacbell.net 530-304-2833

    Tailpipe lamp orientation

Folks, I'm working a bit blind because I haven't been able to find my Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards for several months. What's the proper orientation of the tailpipe clamp to the frame? See attached. Thanks.

    Fender equivalence?

Folks - I think I know the answer, but wanted to sample the brain trust. Are the rear fenders for the 30 Fordor/Town Sedans the same as the 31 slant Fordor/Town Sedan? Thanks.
