    Combustion chamber sparkplug length question?

I received the NOS aftermarket cast iron heads to replace the corroded aluminum heads on my '34. The 18MM Autolite 386 sparkplugs come up approx. 3 threads short compared to the aluminum heads. Is this something to be concerned about and should I run a longer reach sparkplug?

    1934 Houdaille Front Shock?

Removed front shocks. Have good resistance but low on fluid, it just drips out. Has a heavy gear lube (differential fluid) smell to me. What is recommended to flush with, kerosene, mineral spirits or denatured alcohol? And what to fill with? Edit: Fluid pools on top of water. Does not appear to...

Front spring shackle stud removal from perch?

I am familiar with the Model A type spring shackle with the shackle studs running through steel or bronze bushings. The '34 appears to be different. The stud has a square just beneath the threads and there are rubber flanges or bushings surrounding the stud. Does not respond to hammer taps...

Front Mono Spring on a '34 5W Coupe?

A previous owner installed a 1-3/4" wide reverse eye front "mono spring" on my '34 5w coupe. I was skeptical about it from the get go and wondered why it was installed. Since I have only driven the car around the neighborhood and not at speed. (Engine and trans pulled for repairs.) I have no...

21 Stud cylinder head with unique combustion chamber.

In my search to replace corroded aluminum cylinder heads, I came across a pair of these. Head is dated 5-12-48 with part number 40-6050-B. (Cast Iron.) The last photo is of my existing aluminum (40-6049-A) which shows a different chamber shape. 40-6050-B appears to be a unique combustion...

    1935 oil pan baffle plate?

I picked up my 1935 block and misc parts yesterday. (Going in my '34 5w.) The oil pan that came with it is in good shape but is missing the baffle plate. Does anyone have a picture or drawing of what the '35 baffle plate looks like? Below is a comparison of the '34 and '35 oil pans. The '35...

    1935 block in 1934?

My 1934 engine had water in the oil and upon disassembly, I found huge crack repairs on both banks with a bolt running from outside the block to the valve galley. Also, deep rust pits in No. 4 cylinder and a hairline crack in No. 1 cyl. I have located what appears to be a clean 1935 block...

    Pulling engine attachment points?

I am considering using these 4 corner intake manifold 3/8" - 16 threaded holes (circled) to lift the engine/transmission out with. The holes are blind at a little over 5/8" deep and are tapped into solid cast iron. From what I have read on past forum posts, I think I will be good using these...

    1934 Thermostats repro, original, reliable?

Checking the thermostats housed in the upper hoses on my 221 cu. in. '34. They appear to be in good shape and begin to open at 160° and are full open at 190°. I am not familiar with this type of thermostat. They appear to be original. Keep or replace with newer type?

    Another '39 transmission ??

With my new to me '34 with '39 transmission now running, I took it out for a test drive and found it will not shift into 3rd (high) gear. Just barely starts into the 3rd slot then stops like something is blocking its travel to full engagement. :( I am going to remove the tower and have a look...

    Rear axle ratio

Today, I removed the floor plate above the transmission for inspection and lube purposes on the '34. On the speedometer gear turtle, I see 11-39. Does this mean I may have a 3:54 rear axle ratio? Are there any other tell tale signs such as a stamping on the rear axle?

    1934 5 Window Rumble Lid

Hi all. On my new to me 1934 5 window standard coupe I noticed it does not have the rumble seat lid latch plate that attaches to the body. Does anyone have a photo, drawing or link to a site that shows the correct one? Not coming up with much from the vendor sites as there are apparently more...

1935 Ford 5W Coupe Shift Lever?

All, I am looking at a 1935 Ford with a 1948/'49 59A-B 239 engine ****** combo. What puzzles me is the straight angled shift lever. '35 Ford cars had a "goose neck" bend in the shift lever. Could the 239 engine trans combo have come from a '48/'49 pickup? Didn't '48/'49 cars all have column...

Thinking about upgrading from Model A to Early V8

Hi Early V8 members, I am considering selling the Model A and purchasing a mid '30's Ford V8 coupe. What I am looking for is the sweet spot of the 1930's. The 1932 to '34's are typically too expensive for my budget. I am thinking a '35 or '36. What say you?:)

Borg Warner OD vs Mitchell OD weight?

Thinking about replacing my BW overdrive with a Mitchell. Does anyone know if the Mitchell is lighter weight than the BW? Mitchell has aluminum case, BW all cast iron.

Astra-Werke, owner of a 1930 Coupe in Germany recently produced this video. Shows his technique of dealing with modern urban traffic. This is a follow up to the recent thread Dealing with modern traffic which I can't seem to find. https://youtu.be/G4ouqY7LrUw?si=rNG9pxB29zn33JVB
