    Ring gear comparison

Found this original ring gear (note Ford logo). Bevel on the teeth is very different on the original gear (bottom in photo) compared to a new reproduction ring gear (top). I would have taken it for a sign of wear except that all the teeth look identical. Is this gear worn out or were they made...

    Unidentified rear axle

I found a rear axle in an estate collection. It's very similar to an A axle but not identical. Can anyone ID it? (Model A axle on the right, mystery axle on the left)

Sanity check re: dlx roadster top irons

I got some deluxe roadster top irons out of a collection, but it appears that they have been sawed off just above the spot where they bolt to the body. Is that the way it looks to you guys? I don't have another set to compare with. My guess is they don't have much value in this state.

New technical article: Adding legroom to a 28/29 phaeton

One of our Tar Wheel A's members, George Goodridge of Durham, worked with me to document the process of adding five inches of legroom to his '29 phaeton project car. We are pleased to release this article for the use of anyone looking to attempt a similar modification...

Head gasket question for the old-timers

Back in the day, one could get either steel or copper head gaskets for Model A. These days it's composite or copper. Why did vendors stop using steel for head gaskets? Why did they start? Thinking about it from first principles, it seems like copper would have been an initially inexpensive...

New e-book: Workshop Guide to the Marvel-Schebler Carb

Hi folks, Twelve years ago, "Jeff in BC" published a thread on FordBarn called "Marvel carb disection," which included detailed annotated photos and diagrams explaining how the Marvel carb works. Until now, that thread has remained the best available primer on the Marvel carb. With Jeff's...

Favorite items at Smith & Jones?

Our club newsletter, which I write, is sponsored by Smith & Jones, and I would like to feature a couple of their items rather than just putting their logo in the newsletter. Does anyone have parts they specifically go to SnJ for, or items they carry that the bigger vendors don't?

    Snyders link/search weirdness

You may have noticed odd behavior on the Snyder's website: - Some parts are not showing up in certain searches - Direct links to part pages don't work Searches At the moment, the website has a bug in the search function: if a part's catalog entry is blank for "Model year," then if you limit...

For Sale Items from large parts collection

Some of you may remember my ad for a large Model A collection last year, including over a dozen cars and hundreds of parts. Well, most of the cars are gone and all the high-value parts have been picked through, but there's still a few good items left. I have put together a photo gallery showing...

Correct link belt for Model A

This discussion started elsewhere but I don't want it to hijack the thread. For those who may not know, the Horne harmonic balancers are thicker than the stock pulley (same diameter but "taller"), so they take up more of the hollow in the front crossmember. This makes it impossible to remove a...

Current status of centrifugal advance distributors

This is a roundup of the current options for centrifugal advance distributors for the Model A. Many people believe that operating a manual spark advance is part of the Model A experience. If you're one of these people, this post is not for you – do not read further and do not reply with your...

Spring tension on new pressure plates

I mainly do Model A stuff, but I'm starting to put together the parts for a V8 transmission modification. I had heard murmuring about the reproduction three-finger pressure plates. I was able to procure both a NOS pressure plate assembly and a brand new reproduction. Both are the correct type...

Selling California cars out of state

I have a question for folks in California who have sold a Model A to someone out of state. I am assisting with the dispersal of an estate that includes several cars that are titled in CA. The cars are not operational, but they have clean CA titles and plates. The buyers for these cars will be...
