    Headlight breaker

Restoring a 1958 ranchero and noticed a rectangular metal breaker screwed to the driver side under the dash. I think this is a headlight relay but not sure. Red wire one side and red/black other side. I need to replace it because it has no continuity. It says 12V 12AMP. Isn't this quite small...

    1958 ford flywheel

I'm having trouble finding a ring gear for my 1958 ranchero 292. I ordered one from pioneer but it did not expand enough to go over the flywheel. Took it to 500 degrees. The ID of the ring is 13.352. Od of flywheel is 13.5. Do I have the wrong flywheel? If so where can I get one

Carburetor selection for a 67 mustang stock 289

I want to put a Holley on my restored 67 Mustang which has a stock 289. I have been told that the 4160 600 cfm Classic is a good choice because it will work with my breather, fuel line set up and stock intake. My question is: Will I see any negative performance with a 600 cfm carb on this stock 289?

    Bed strip hole layout

I am building a custom long bed for my 1953 chevy 3600 but I would like to use the bed strips that are already prepunched. Can some one give me the measurements of where the hole are in the prepunched strips from the front to the rear of the bed. By looking at pictures I think there are seven...

    head gasket not sealing

I am having trouble getting a head gasket to seal around #7 cyl of my 57 312. I have tried 2 times to get one to seal and both are leaking around the 7 cyl. Before I tried it this last time I took the block and the head to the machine shop. They decked the block but the head was okay. We thought...

    Top Dead Center question

Can someone tell me if TDC is when the piston FIRST reaches the top of its travel? I ask this question because there is a few degrees at the very top of the stroke that the piston dwells before it starts back down. Or is TDC in the center of that dwell period?

    Distributor cap/rotor button debris

I have a situation that I have not run into before. When I restored my 56 tbird/ 312, I restored it back to stock with one exception: I replaced the points with Petronix electronics in the distributor and a Petronix coil. The engine runs great but when I take the distributor cap off there is...

Does any one know where I can find a oiling diagram(showing galleys and flow direction) for a 56 312? My shop manual does not show one.

    Piston Ring position?

Is there a best piston ring position for a 312 Y block? I have never installed rings in this old of a engine. The shop that honed the block did not know if these older engines ran best at a different ring position than later engines. Would like to know the best position for top, bottom, top oil...

    Left rocker arm oiling problem

Just finished the rebuild of my 56 312. The block was checked very closely for plugged oil passage and all were cleaned out. Since I had just replaced the cam and timing gear just 500 miles before I decided to rebuild I kept the same cam but had new cam bearings installed and the holes were...

Pinion seal still leaking after replacement

I have a 56 tbird that had a bad leak coming from the pinion seal. I bought a new seal and replaced the seal according to the manual procedures. The yoke shaft had very little scaring on it and I did not think the yoke would need to be replaced. Before I remove it and try another I thought I...

    Head bolt torque unclear

My Ford shop manual for my 56 tbird(with a 312) says that the final torque on the head bolts is 90lbs for a 312 (page 362 of 1956 Ford Car Shop Manual Reprint). This amount seems to be a lot considering that the final torque for the 272 and 292 is 75lbs. IS this correct and since the specs on...

    312 overheating?

My 56 tbird temp gauge shows that the engine is running about 212 degrees but the engine never seems to steam out the radiator. I have replaced the gauge and sending unit with a new one that is made for the tbird. I also have a hand held infared temp sensor gun that I have tested the engine...

Can different rocker arms work together

I just torn down a 56 312. I found that one head had rocker arms stamped EAN 6564 B1 and the other head had rockers arms stamped ECG 6564 B2. Both heads were stamped ECZ B. Is it okay to have these two different sets of rocker arms as long as all the rocker arms are on the same head? If it is...

    Rocker arm repair

I have a set of ECZ-B heads that I would like to put on a 56 312 in a tbird. The rocker arms have a lot of wear on the valve side to the point that a round spot has worn into the rocker arm(from valve stem contact). Can these rocker arms be machined/ground to provide a new surface for the top of...

sealer or not on oil pan gasket

Back to the old topic: Do you use sealer or not on the oil pan gasket and do you use it on both mating surfaces. I have heard so many pros and cons about this topic on newer engines but I now have to put a gasket on my 56 312. What procedure is correct for the 312 and if sealer is used, what is...

    distributor return spring adjustment

I have a 312 56 in a tbird. The distributor has a dual vac advance. When I attach the vac lines to the distributor (AT IDLE) the vac advance immediately advances the timing just a little. It causes the engine to run a little rough at idle. Once the engine is above 800 rpms it seems to run fine...
