Will Lincoln Zephyr gears fit in a 32 trans case? I’d like to keep use case as it is a matching #s car. Thanks for the help. Tom
...... ... This problem also requires fully assembling the cluster into case first, then assembling rear upper shaft, and installin and assembling the input gear and its bearing last. No big deal, just putting the jigsaw puzzle together in a new order...
I have never done anything myself with '32 cases, but I have been told that they often have minor clearance problems requiring some light grinding below the front teeth on the cluster. This problem also requires fully assembling the cluster into case first, then assembling rear upper shaft, and installin and assembling the input gear and its bearing last. No big deal, just putting the jigsaw puzzle together in a new order...
In many cases, LZ gears have a reputation that may not be fully deserved.
Way back in the distant past when the flat head Ford V8 was at the peak of it's performance life, the more inventive shade tree mechanics were grasping for anything that could help the flat head keep up with the emerging overhead valve engines, Olds & Cads.
The Zephyr gears gave the drag racers a taller first and second gear and since they were only racing in short 1/4 mile races they cared less about how tight their engines were wound up in high gear.
All the hype in the performance mags sent everyone on a frenzy to put Zephyr gears in their street rods.... I feel into that trap. I pulled my 28 tooth Merc gear box and installed 26 tooth LZ gears. This proved to be a big mistake. My rear end is a Columbia with 3.78 gearing and my engine is a highly modified 59 AB.
The transmission modification transformed a car that ran very well into a slug that would hardly pull it's self away from the curb. Within a week or so I pulled the trans and went back to the 28 tooth gear set.
Many of my friends experienced the same problems with the LZ conversion, especially the guys that were going to the "Dago" look with big and little tires.
