Just as a curiosity, were the Std and Delux heaters the same? My std, although not stock, has the correct 40 heater but without the 2 chrome strips. Perhaps the heater was/is like the dash chrome strip wise std vs deluxe?
4dford is correct in that only one hot water heater was installed in 1940 Fords. It should have two vertical stainless strips. It was a dealer-installed option, and so far as I know there was only one model offered. The heater pictured above is in my '40 Standard.

How is the switch mounted to the dash for 40 heater? Do they make a new knob for the defroster control?
What size bulb does the heater switch take?
