What color is the hot water heater for a 40 Ford suppose to be?Does it also have pin stripes on it?If so can you purchase these stripes any where?

Here's mine. I used 1/8" modeler's striping tape for the stripes.

The front of the sheet metal housing contained two doors, one on each side of a vertical set of louvers. Clips held a vertical stainless strip on each side of the louvers.
The exterior metal parts were painted light gray. The sheet metal housing had three red horizontal stripes on its two sides. These stripes were approximately 1/8" wide and spaced approximately 5/16" apart.
I have the stripes available for $5, postage paid.
They are the correct width, color and are applied in one piece so as to assure proper spacing.

Just as a curiosity, were the Std and Delux heaters the same? My std, although not stock, has the correct 40 heater but without the 2 chrome strips. Perhaps the heater was/is like the dash chrome strip wise std vs deluxe?

It was a dealer-installed option, and so far as I know there was only one model offered. The heater pictured above is in my '40 Standard.

4dford is correct in that only one hot water heater was installed in 1940 Fords. It should have two vertical stainless strips.

I repainted mine the color of the dash.

How is the switch mounted to the dash for 40 heater? Do they make a new knob for the defroster control?

It mounts through a hole in the underlip of the dash panel under the right side of the instrument cluster. Larry Caplan has the correct knob:
