As mentioned above...remove the horn button and steering wheel nut.
There will be 2- 5/16 threaded holes; one on each side of the steering shaft in the steering wheel hub.The steering shaft is tapered, with a key to index the steering wheel. Using a spring shackle plate, and 2- 5/16 fine thread bolts. Bolt the shackle plate inside the steering hub. As you tighten the bolts it will separate the steering wheel hub from the steering shaft.
Easy if you have an old spring shackle.

John:

That is a nice looking puller / How did you make the 2 pieces that go under the steering wheel / is it parts welded together or did you machine each half out of one piece ???

Hi Bill. That entire puller was made from "scrapped" pieces and parts thrown away by my previous employer. I religiously checked that scrap bin outside of our prototype machine/model shop every day for goodies. The two pieces you mention were actually made originally to hold/clamp an electric motor onto a life test rig. All I did was remove sharp corners where they come up to the bottom of the wheel hub. They were just items that I happened to have handy in my home workshop when I put that puller together.

There are no 5/16" holes in the older steering wheel hub. I drilled and tapped two holes in my 39 wheel and used a standard wheel puller to remove the wheel. The puller that was shown in the previous post works well, but care must be used not to damage the surface of the hub.

Tom-

Several ways to do it but the simplest way is: 1) remove horn rod assembly and wheel nut; 2) slide column down leaving a gap between the wheel and column; 3) mount bearing separator; 4) use a gear puller to lift off the wheel

Tom

There are no threaded holes on this type of wheel. It requires a special tool to remove it from the shaft.
