Transmission Fluid Change Procedure

Unscrew the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission housing and drain the oil out. Reinstall the plug. Remove the plug on the side of the transmission case. Fill to spill, which means dump oil in until it spills over. Let it run off and reinstall the plug.

I buy my 600W from Bratton's, it comes in quart plastic squeeze bottles. Cut the tip off the snout and put your finger over it until you have the container at a proper angle and squeeze.

Some people will argue that the level should be a half inch below the side spill port. I don't think it makes much difference.

Finish up by poking a wire through the vent hole in the tower to make sure it is clear of crud.

I recommend taking the fill plug out first. If it will not come out you could be left with an immobilized car with no oil in the transmission. (Same goes for rear axle.)

Ask me how I know.

Informative thread...for me. Since I have no idea what and when the last service was done on Sarah, when she arrives, I shall service her all except the crankcase oil, they changed that, I could see. I plan on draining the radiator and adding 50/50 antifreeze. The transmission I shall drain also and add???????? This thread mentioned nothing about STP and I've read it in many transmission related threads about the use of STP helping the shifting of gears.

Check Sarah's 'Rear End" while your under there. She'll love you for it.

Great advice to know......thanks. Keep it coming. I'm planning on being under her, on top on her, in her, all over her. I couldn't think of a better way to pass this winter than to be going over Sarah with a fine tooth comb.....................

I have changed the trans fluid by taking off the shifter tower. Solves that problem... And while you're looking at the top of the transmission you can remove the clutch inspection plate and lube the throw out bearing.

While you are playing with gear oil an often forgotten lube point is the steering gear

also noted...thanks. For some reason the 'clutch' is my biggest concern. Had one go out on me once.....I was not a happy camper.

I believe the AA 4 Speed vents thru its shifter top. There is a lot of clearance where the Reverse Lock out rod is.
I have 4 of these AA 4 Speeds and don't see any vent holes on them.

All good points expressed so far. The same discipline applies to differential maintenance. Draining and rinsing with a kerosene type light solvent before refilling (after replacing the drain plug:)) will go a long way toward many more happy miles.
While you are there, top off the steering gear also. Same 600W fluid.
Spring is coming.

Since I have you, I'm changing the trans fluid first time. Can I flush to clean with diesel since I don't have a source for kerosine? Or just put the new 600w in with a splash of STP?
Thx

Diesel, kerosene, jet fuel....:D
It's all the same stuff as far as we are concerned.
Diesel should work just fine
