Looking for anyone that has original 29 Top bow for a Roadster to use as patterns, OR anyone has the original drawing. PLEASE Let me know on either of these issues...thanks in advance...;)

Mark, I did not do these measmurements myself, I just combined these with a pic from here a while ago for clarity.

I would suggest that A and C to B should be the same .

The metal top bends seem to be hacked off at the top and full curved wood bows used .
But at least this should give you an idea .

I just end posted a soft top frame with wooden bows I looking to sell

31 ford deluxe roadster ....LeBaron Booney manf.

Mark, I do have some of those prints that I purchased at Bensen a few years ago but I have not had the time to put them into Solidworks yet and they are hard to read.

Secondly, and one of the big reasons I have not done so yet is there was actually 3 different sets of top irons used on the 28/29's according to Bill Sturm and I found this out after I had researched this, so I/someone would need to go back to Bensen and pull the iron prints and see which bow it shows to use with each specific set.

Bottom-line, I would think it would be in your best interest for you to figure out which irons you have, and you take a day to drive over to Dearborn and look thru the prints until you find exactly what you need. Too much chance of wrong info any other way.

Of course the drawings posted of steam bent bows is not applicable here but may prove useful in the future as mine have.

There were three top assemblies for 1928-29 Roadsters but only two types of bow assemblies that I'm aware of.

The Illustration below was FAR more time consuming than I expected when I started! It shows the top bow change I'm talking about. Essentially all they did was lengthen the front bow by 1". The impact is far greater than one might expect without seeing it. Once familiar however, you can't overlook the distinction when seeing a car.

The date noted may shift a month or two but I'm in the ballpark. Mark definitely needs the later type for June '29.

Marco, just out of interest what was the third variation?

"There were three top assemblies for 1928-29 Roadsters but only two types of bow assemblies that I'm aware of."

The first type bows had two versions. First, the Whipcord top and second, the black top. The third was a black top on the new bows.

There was also a difference in the construction of the back curtains in the last version but I need to check through my drawings to confirm whether it applied to all tops on the "new" bows.

Mark: I'm confused . Are you looking for patterns/dimensions for just the wood top bows, OR the steel top iron assembly?

Marco: Thanks for the great explanation/diagrams of the two variations in the steel top iron assemblies.

I've never seen the steel reproduction assemblies advertised as anything other than 1928-29. I wonder which of the two styles the reproduction ones most closely resemble - anybody have some to measure? Any comments on quality?

So if the difference is one inch, it looks like the early back curtain is angled about 1/4 inch forward of parallel to door gap, and the later curtain looks to be about 3/4 inch back to parallel.

Is this how others see it ?

On a perfectly restored car, would the rear door gap be exactly at a right angle to the ground ?

SO Marco that is telling me/showing me that there is a shift about 1 inch BACK to create more of a "Slope". WITH a Wider front by 1". This I can see BUT can you tell me the "width" of the bows them selves...The front wood bow being 1" wider then the rest.

"BICK" Thanks for that, so I need to be looking for some 22 inch front bows and a roll of whipcord! How do you know you need 22"???

IF so my June Roadster would need a 23" That would be right if it was June 1929, according to the information supplied by Marco, and I have no no doubt he would have researched his facts or was certain in his viewpoint before publishing it. My Roadster was assembled early Feb1928, therefore requires a 22" front bow.

BICK I am talking about the WIDTH of the wood Bow...not the Top Irons., I need to know the width..YES with the drawing above your front to center iron would be 22 for early and mine 23" for mid to end.

At least some of the wood "ribs" made in recent years are pretty decent in my experience. The one (and major) exception is the front or #1 rib. All the modern ones I've seen lack the 1/4" arc forward that is required to look proper.
