Grundy Insurance Change?

What's happened to Grundy? I've been with them for 20 years. Had good service and a real car person on the otherend when I've had questions. Just called for the first time in a few years and got a real runaround. First I had to wait for 10 minutes to get an agent. Then she didn't know much about cars or car insurance. The I learn Grundy as I knew it may be gone and they may now be part of a mega insurance company. Am I behind the times? What's happened? Who has switched and who do you like?

You would be hard pressed to get antique car insurance with national rates and hometown service. It's just the way it is. Higher rates, hometown service or lower rates and national representatives.

I called them Tuesday and did have to wait 10 minutes but the rep did answer all my questions.

I've had Grundy for years with no claims and no problems. Last year my Grundy agent changed the insurance company and sent me a 30% higher premium. Luckily I waited a few weeks and Grundy sent me the renewal forms with about the same preminum. It was a little higher, but not 30%.

Just last August I purchased insurance for two antique vehicles that I've had for many years, but they weren't previously insured because they weren't ever driven. I priced the same coverage through both Grundy and Haggerty, and was surprised to find that Haggerty was roughly 65% the price of Grundy. For about 3/4 the price of Grundy I was able to get much better coverage from Haggerty and the people that I spoke with on the phone were very knowledgeable (and courteous too!). I can't recommend them highly enough.

I dropped Grundy a few years ago after getting charged a fee when I wanted to change the coverages at the time of renewal. I certainly don't mind paying whatever the policy is, but a change fee? And a change fee during the renewal period? I had to check and see if I hadn't accidentally called Delta Airlines since there was a change fee, but no, it was indeed Grundy. After 10 years of giving them money with no claims, they did not care that I was canceling with them nor why.

Hagerty has pleasantly surprised me several times since switching by doing little extras. They are terrific!

I used J.C. Taylor for about 35 years and never filed a claim (3 antique cars insured); about three years ago I tried to add another car to the policy and they gave me the runaround so I switched to Hagerty and have never looked back. I'm glad I changed.

I think it is wise to buy your antique insurance thru the rep that handles your other cars and homeowners. They can use Grundy, JC Taylor, Hagerty or whoever you or they want. But, it gives you a local rep who knows you if push comes to shove in some situation.

Fortunately I've never had to use it, but I've had Hagerty for several years and have always found them to be top notch to deal with. Courteous, knowledgeable and helpful folks on the phone each and every time I've called upon them.

I have my cars garaged in a different state than where they're registered, and they are fine with that too.

Haggerty has been good to me for the two years I have had them. Last year I had to get a tow and I had real person (in America) in minutes, and she had a tow to me fast - which was great because I was not in the best part of Flint.

I also switched two years ago to Hagerty because Grundy (which I had for many many years) switched to Philadelphia Indemnity. I couldn't get them on the phone just to ask questions and if I did they weren't able to answer my questions and said they would get back to me. I never got a response from them.
That is why I switched and have been happy ever since. I have three cars insured with Hagerty and if you have any questions, they are just a phone call away and very pleasant when you speak with them. Afordman31
My Dad is still using Grundy and didn't seem to have the problems that I had. Go figure.

I used Hagerty for years with no claims and no problems. I changed to Grundy about three years ago because they offer unlimited miles driven. Still no claims and no problems !!!

Doesn't Haggerty restrict your driving? Like how often and where you can drive? For example you don't get covered if you park at a mall or get in a wreck taking the kids to school? Basically you're only covered going to/from/during shows/parades?

Thats the way that I took it and the reason that I switched to Grundy.

That is not true.

Talk to Hagerty; ppl switch to them for a reason. You do NOT need to go thru an agent, you can go to them directly.

Most of their employees are graduates of McPherson College Restoration program. That program has 5 pathways, including a communications path. They still have to take some basic restoration hands-on courses. The communications grads almost always end up in antique car ins. That is why they are so helpful on the phone at Hagerty. And why you get a real human on the other end of the phone

Ok I went to their website and here is what it says...

"Our policy allows you occasional pleasure use, so you can go for a weekend cruise or attend unlimited events with no fixed mileage restrictions**."

Note the **. The ** refers to...

"Occasional pleasure use does not mean use for daily driving to and from work or school, routine shopping, etc."

Seems like every year someone mentions that Grundy has undergone big changes, then several others pipe in that they have no problems at all.....I have also had them for over 6 years and have no complaints whatsoever. I have no mileage restrictions.....just cannot commute to work in it daily, and have stated value coverage, and a very fair price.....much less than the carrier I use for my other cars.

Here is what Grundy's website says...

"No Mileage Limitations – The policy authorizes unlimited hobby use of the vehicles in collector activities, exhibits and parades"

Really not any different from Haggerty.
