Auxiluary Gas tank

Since I am still fighting rust in the cowl tank of my 29 CCPU, I am considering mounting a marine type plastic gas tank in the bed with a 6v fuel pump and regulator to bypass the problem altogether. Has anyone else ever tried this?
I know it's somewhat similar to the idea of a Speedster tank used on the Rootlieb speedsters.
I am thinking I will have the Lentville huckster body put on this chassis in the spring, so the tank will be mounted right behind the cab, inside an Oak box to match the rest of the woodwork.

I don't think so, since the marine tanks are reenforced poly, and it would be mounted inside the bed of the huckster, outside of the cab itself.
No more dangerous then having 11 gallons of gasoline sitting in your lap like the stock tank.

I mounted one in the back of a 29 pickup for somebody. He had a woodshop,so he made an oak headboard, and I mounted a 6 gallon tank to it.The bottom of the tank was about 16 inches above the carb,so it fed fine. There was a shut off under the new tank,so when he stopped he just reached over and shut it off.He had what looked like asphalt in the original tank.I hooked his new tank up,then dumped some laquer thinner in his original.I told him to keep changing it,or bring it by and I would. We took a bunch of thick soupy stuff out,but the owner passed before we got the original tank cleaned and rehooked.

sounds like a doable plan to me. if your fighting rust fill your tank with evapo rust and by driving it around it will slosh all over. evapo rust will dissolve the rust and you should be able to drain it out once that happens...

Hi
Just a follow up on how you made out with this project. Did you mount the tank, need/ use a fuel pump, what type? Any pictures? This could be a good temporary solution for folks with a bad fuel tank and it would be good to document your success. (Assuming it was a success!). :D

when we were looking into tank location under the bed seemed the best choice. If you look at the rear of the bed the tank rolls under and looks like it was suppose to be there. I found the tank at the SEMA show a couple of years ago it is stainless steel and comes ready to install, you do need to drill the holes in the flange to match your mounting bolts. You use bolts that area already in use on the bed so it is a nice clean installation. It is a 20 gallon tank.

I'll try to get a couple of pics on here soon. It's still in a kind of a temporary setting, since I want to build a wooden box around it to hide it, and clean up the looks of the bed a bit...

Can SOMEBODY please tell me how to upload full size pictures from my Photo files? The site keeps asking for the U.R.L of the pictures, and they don't have one, they are on my hard drive.
