Questions again..

I have the 8ba in the deuce and the crank pulley is not going to clear the crossmember.. The engine is against the ******, not yet bolted (lacks 1/8") and also against the firewall because I cant drop the engine down to the mounts because of the pulley...

I really dont want to cut anything do I need to get my 59a pulley and bolt it on?

Take a look at the picture..

Also I am beginning to wonder if either the frame is not the correct frame or my pedals are not correct becaise you can see where the frame was cut with a torch to get the clutch pedal installed.. I will post a pic of this later.. I gotta go put a headliner in my Che#y... Thanks for the help// Tom

Putting an 8BA in an earlier frame always requires adjustments due to the longer stack up from front to rear. Looking at your picture, if that is close to where you want it, you may have to convert your engine for the early type pulleys utilizing the single belt. Sometimes the lip on the rear of the front crossmember has to be trimmed down. Not totally removed just trimmed down to a minimal upturn. Sometimes a model A crosmember is used to narrow and lower the front end and can be altered to give a little more room.

(Sans pictures) If your K-member is still in its correct position and that is locating your rear engine mount and wishbone, then you should have no trouble with pedals if they are an original set of 32 pedals. I've seen a lot of altered pedals floating around so that could also be a problem. The pedals should fit right in to that K-member and still fit through the body floor unless the body has been moved.

Looks like a set of 40 or later pedals set way to the center. That clutch link is interesting. On that style pedal it should go straight forward to a cross-shaft...that pins to the cross-shaft in the transmission. I can't see how you would get enough pedal travel with it runnng over the top like that. Luckily the K-member leg appears to mostly intact. I'd find a set of 32 pedals and convert them to hydraulic...if that is the direction you are headed.

I AGREE,

I think in the long run, you will be MUCH better off with original pedals.

The Early V-8 Garage, (626) 338-2282, makes a Hydraulic Brake Conversion Kit to properly mount the Master Cylinder and convert the original 32 pedals to work with their system. They can also provide you with all the other Hydraulic Brake components you may need for your project.

For the front pully interference problem, you may want to consider a 59 AB crank pulley with the froward pully removed. You will not need the front pulley as you may want to use a single belt and a generator, with a fan, mounted on the front of the intake manifold or a idler which mounts the fan for a multipal carb set up.

Also, if you have the engine apart, I would also consider cutting one inch off the end of the crank and re-drilling it for the crank bolt. You also have to shorten the crank pulley one inch. This will give you a lot more room at the front cross member.

Keep us posted as you proceed.

59a seems to fit without any modifications. the two pulleys stradle the stock `32 front crossmember. didn't need to cut anything.

I thought I would pass along this idea. Cut the front pulley off if you don't need it. This bolt is slightly in front of the remaining pulley, but it might give you the room you are looking for.

I may be wrong, but I don't think you can use the late model pulley with the original crosmember without major surgery to the crossmember. I just went thru this,. I think the best answer is to use a 59 type front pulley, machine the front pulley off, then just use an original crank nut. You will need to use the early type pumps, but when done, it'll appear pretty original and it'll work well. I don't think any work is necessary to shorten the front of the crank. I'm using a Mercury crank and it did not need shortening. This is in a 32 frame with a 59 type block with original 32 engine mounts

The problem being with the early 59AB pumps and pulley on an 8BA is that the belt won't clear the top mount distributor!

Take your time and trim a shallow semi-circle notch in the rear lip of the cross-member so your crank pulley clears. Just did this to mine (8BA in an original 32 frame). Looks factory and plus you cannot see it once the engine, belts, hoses are installed.

Here's another shot of a 59 series in a 32 frame. The machined surface on the front of the block is about 6 7/8" from the center line of the radiator mounting holes, and this position allows the back of the block to clear the firewall. I found it necessary to notch the front cross member in order to get the fan belt on and off.
Motor mounts are copies of 32's.

The real challenge here (and the original question posted) deals with installing a flathead with the top mount (49 - 53) distributor in a manner that does not require cutting the front crossmember. Useful information on meeting this challenge would help all of us.

Yes, I did mean machice it off, I had a friend put it in a lathe and we cut it very close to the center hub. Then finish grind it with a die grinder.

with the trans mounted against the "K" member in it's stock location. the front of my (59a) block is 7 1/2" back from the radiator hole centers and a belt will pass by the stock crossmember just fine. and the back of the block clears the firewall.
i don't know what "billm" on your post # 12 has done different to come up with a measurement of 6 7/8" so he had to "notch" some off the crossmember to get the belt in?
i realize all my information is regarding the 59a block - not the 8ba like you have, but maybe it will be helpfull somehow.

the pedals are going to be a challenge...
I found these pedals in the garage. any ideas what they are?
Please say 32....

Thanks again..

Set on the left definitely looks like 32 passenger and commercial but it's hard to tell for sure because the photo is a bit unclear. Set on the right looks like a later model big truck.
