another-'nother failed fan

I have NO fan on mine, got a V8 sealed pump with an adaptor to the a Lion Head from H&H. I questioned them about running with out a fan, they said it would not be a problem, and they were right. Never had a heat up problem, course I have a good Walker Radiator, and I can't make it over heat. And shes been in the tropics of St.Thomas up the mountains and now in Sarasota, and its been HOT here. Iceman

My '31 came with an original two bladed fan. It looks to be in excellent conditiion, which I still have. I immediately changed it out for a forged and balanced aluminum one. I have had no problems. When I had my pick up, it came with a four bladed fan which I changed for an aluminum two blader. It too performed flawlessly. I take what you folks say about 80 year old fan blades seriously.

My 31 pick up came with a four blader which i immeidately changed. Both luminum fans have served me well. I take seriously what you folks say about original fans.

Gentlemen, I have a original 4 blade truck fan on mine, do they have the same problems as the original 2 blade fans? thanks Paul

Paul,

The fan you think is an original 4 blade truck fan is probably the fan developed by Ford for the 1933-34 4 cylinder motors (part number 46-8600). This fan was stocked as the replacement fan for 1928-1934 4 cylinder motors which explains why there a lot of them around compared to the number of 1933-34 4 cylinder vehicles produced. I had one fail on my car but I think they are a better bet than the 2 bladed ones. It was a long time ago and nobody was paying attention to fans at that time the way we do today.

They probably will change the JS when God-forbid, a failed blade kills or seriously hurts someone.

No where in the RG & JS does it say that you HAVE TO have an original fan

1. They are JUDGING STANDARDS, and restoration GUIDELINES. Don't change the standard, use the guidelines as just that...guidelines. Color outside the lines all you want. If you don't use an original fan (one of two styles) you will lose points. So what? I plan on losing points in a number or areas. Original muffler, battery etc..

2. The REQUIREMENTS for blue ribbon (fine point) judging were changed a couple YEARS ago to allow an 'original style two blade fan' into blue ribbon judging.

3. If the standards were changed to give full points for a 'original style two blade fan' rather than as written, would more people enter fine point? Probably not. I'm not aware of anyone that is interested in fine point judging complaining about not being 'allowed' a 'original style two blade fan'. If they don't play the game, they shouldn't be allowed to make the rules.

Will the Standards allow or require me to paint my original two blade fan with isocyanate paint in my garage (while wearing shorts and no shirt or respirator)?
I just might do it if someone doesn't take responsibility and stop me! :D
That's more than the minds eye can take:rolleyes:

Not sure Louis got an answer:
Are the aluminum balanced 2 blade fans suitable for driver A?

What are drivers/touring A's running for fans.

You show guys can debate originals and lost points, some of us just want to drive 80 year old cars without parts flying off.

I have been running one of Mike's alum. 2 blade fans for years about 35K miles. I have seen many orig 2 blade fans fail on the road. I am of the impression that original 4 blade (not re-pop) or truck fans are OK. Assuming they have not been damaged or modified. Just my opinion, personally don't like the look of plastic fans on an A. The alum balanced looks close to original to most observers. JS are OK as written.

Stories are out there that some 'A' s have been running around just fine without a fan. Ram air I guess. Not that I would recommend not using a fan.

I do worry about my two blade steel fan. And inspect it weekly for cracks and use high gloss paint as an indicator of a crack. I give her a little push~pull. I like to think keeping it under 45 mph and driving as if I had a raw egg 'tween my foot and the foot feed will prevent such a SNAFU.

skip.

Ray, just so we are all clear on this, the fan you are running is not one of Mike Butcher's fans, --but is the one that Don Snyder manufactures. Is that not correct?

I too can confirm casualties with the four-blade 33-34 type fan. The best way to keep parts from "falling off" is with constant inspection of one's vehicle.

Oh, and I REALLY like the comment that Jim Mason made. "If they don't play the game, they shouldn't be allowed to make the rules." What a great way to state what should have been obvious all along.
