another-'nother failed fan

Why people use these things just mystifies me. They appear to be such nice, resonable people. The guy who this belonged to put another one on.

I understand that the appearance of originality has value, but I would argue that, in the case of an 80-year old, pre-fatigued metal fan, the appearance is truly illusory. No way would Henry have condoned putting one of those things on a car he sold.

You'd think for a " driver " the Aluminum ones would look ok/right to the causal observer.
I wonder if there going to change that in the JS, there's other areas in the BOOK they
opened up for safety.

My guess is that people just have stock piles of them and don't want to go out and buy a new one, when they already have a box full of them sitting on a shelf some where. I have to admit, Ive done it myself. I just keep an eye on them.

what kind of fan do you guy's recommend? and do you use them on your"A" ?
I have read that none of the after market fan's are as eff. as the org...is that true?
how big of a problem is this?...Thank's.

WHY does the Judging Standards need to be changed? IMO it doesn't! People get so caught up in choosing areas of the Standards and the Bible that they want to live by, ...and twist the other areas to make things be an excuse for why they shouldn't do it.

The Judging Standards are there to give instruction on what is considered authentic during a MARC or MAFCA competition. Outside of that, what does it matter if you have an original fan or an aftermarket fan? It doesn't!! Even if it did, if you know the amount of points you would lose by having something non-authentic, you weigh the value of those points vs. the risk involved using that type fan. There is risk involved in driving our cars. There is risk involved even hauling our cars in a trailer. The risk is really all about our perception of all involved. What I might deem as risky, others not take the same stance. Why do we need a governing body to dictate whether or not it is safe to use a two blade fan?

Hope the radiator is ok, that cut looks nasty. The 6 blade plastic fan can't be beat, you couldn't pay me to put on a old fan with the cost of the damage it could do.

You guy's are absolutely correct, lost my head (no joke). The part that dazzles me,
is having to check the fan regularly, looking for cracks, on something known to fail,
when you can get one that is not known for failures. Does that sound better?

just get a repo from Mike Affordable, been using the same one for years and works fine and NO NO NO the JS should not be changed at all for any reason what so ever!

To hell with the judging standards. Nobody will be judging mine. I like the aluminum fans and will continue to use them.

Ok, Just last night at club meeting a car had a TWO year old FOUR bladed fan bolted to a HEAVY cast iron pully go thru radiator & both top & bottom sides of hood.. This fan came from one of the BIG TIME re-pop dealers in the country.. I Will not say Who, As it was not his fault, but he did work with the guy on getting a new radiator..:(

Gentlemen, I have a original 4 blade truck fan on mine, do they have the same problems as the original 2 blade fans? thanks Paul

Someone in an earlier thread reported one failing. In same thread, I showed a picture of a new repro 4-blade whose pulley came apart. Fred's experience (above post) was also with a repro, so I assume those are junk.

IF you're using a true original, I would ask myself, "How many times in 80 years do I suppose someone has grabbed one of these blade to adjust the crank position while doing a tuneup." Back in the day, when I first got my A, which had a 4-blade on it, I did that all the time. Never occurred to me to be concerned.

I should have added that the the car owner has gone to a SIX bladed PLASTIC fan, & get this, Going down the road is fine, (He thinks) @ 190 degrees & @ a stop light it over heats. This with a brand new radiator from BRASS WORKS.. NOTHING AGAINST them on this one as its not there fault..

are the two blade cast aluminum [balanced] fans from Mike's afordable as good as any ?
any one have a problem with one ?.....thank's.

I have a recored original radiator on my 31 coupe, before putting it on and a new Snyder's head I took and ran wire and screw drivers as best I could in all of the water jackets in the block to clean them out from rust over the years. It has never overheated and runs about 165 degrees at idle right at the block and the tops and bottom of the radiator is around 145 to 155 degrees this is measured with a digital temp gauge.

Will the Standards allow or require me to paint my original two blade fan with isocyanate paint in my garage (while wearing shorts and no shirt or respirator)?
I just might do it if someone doesn't take responsibility and stop me! :D
I painted the fan red on my september 29. It sure does look purdy when its running.

The old original four blade truck fans are JUST as dangerious as the original model A fans. I have had two of them sling a blade, one almost got me.

I have a 4 inch hole in the top of my hood. I am just glad that I was not standing there when it broke! And that it missed the radiator!

I think what I am going to do is run a 6 blade plastic fan ... at least when it throws a blade it will do much less damage than a steel or alumn fan.

Also I am going to have an artist paint a picture on both sides of the hood of an original two blade fan going round and round!!! :):D

"Film at eleven" ....
