Working on a 29 that has two wires from generator hook both wire to armature side of cut out and battery wire to battery side nothing showed up on the amp, hook a jumper wire across the cut out then showed charged of 15 amps, using a diode cut out any ideas thanks AL

If you have two wires coming out of the genrator then you have a post Model A generator. One wire is the field ground wire and gets mounted under the cutout mounting screw. The other wire is the output wire and goes to the input side of the cutout.

I can get a picture of it this afternoon. I have the same generator on my car, and I also have the diode cutout. The car isn't at my house and I won't be going to work on it until 1 or 2ish eastern time.

Yes, it does matter. Remove the band and check to see which wire leads to the output brush, then be sure that wire goes to the cutout input terminal.

Then using a battery charger (on 6 volts) connect the - lead to the generator adjustable brush and connect the + cable to the other wire, which gets grounded under the cutout mounting screw. The meter on the charger should show about 4 amps.

Here is how mine looks. Looks like black to ground.
